Labyrinth to Tubi
Those who find out Labyrinth First time on Tubi, you're sure to be charmed by this story of a teenage girl who loves a universe fantasy book called Labyrinth. When the half-brother she's supposed to babysit becomes too annoying, she makes the mistake of wishing that the goblins she's read about will come and take the little one away. When real goblins arrive and actually escape with the child, their king gives the teenager only 13 hours to solve the titular maze or the brother she thought was so terrible will turn into a fearsome goblin forever.
Labyrinth features an amazing cast that you wouldn't normally associate with Tubi movies, including Shelley Thompson (best known for her role in The Trailer Park Boys) as the teenager's domineering stepmother. Meanwhile, the teenager is played by '80s icon Jennifer Connelly, an Academy Award-winning actor who has starred in such heavy-hitting films as Requiem for a dream and Beautiful Mind as well as more populist tariffs such as Top Gun: Maverick. But for many, real the star of the show is musical icon David Bowie, whose performance as Jett the Goblin King includes lively songs written specifically for the film.
Lots of Jim Henson dolls
One of the reasons that Labyrinth there are so few actors on screen that the film is like a popular TV show Farscape (even now streaming on Tubi), filled with colorful creatures designed by Jim Henson. In fact, the Muppet master directed the film, and Star Wars guru George Lucas was an executive producer. Their combined genre expertise helped bring this fantasy world to amazing life, and it's a special testament to Henson's skills that all of these creatures and their effects hold up so well decades after the release of this 1986 film.
While Labyrinth has impressed the Tubi audience, it didn't quite make the same splash it did when it was released, especially for its budget. The film ended up grossing $34 million against a $25 million budget, and while it technically made a profit, it was considered a very poor box office, especially for a film with both Henson and Lucas behind it. Fortunately, the film later became a huge hit on home video and has become a fantasy film for movie nerds who like sorcery more than swords.
A true cult classic
It may have taken a while for the general audience to warm up Labyrinthbut the film was an instant hit with critics. On Rotten tomatoesthe film has a 77 percent critical score, with critics generally praising the film's fantastic visuals and director Jim Henson's unparalleled imagination. The film also has an even more impressive 86 percent rating from viewers using the Popcornmeter, proving that this is one fantasy film that has successfully charmed almost everyone who has seen it.
