The first inner page is the title and credits page, which contains two lines of characters parallel to each other, which are what:
-
Mickey Mouse = Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic (both team center)
-
Minnie Mouse = Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (both the only girl on the team)
-
Goofy = Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Comic Relief)
-
Donald Duck = Ben Grimm/The Thing (Short)
The following pages parallel the structure of “Fantastic Four” #1 by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee. In this issue, the front pages introduced the foursome one at a time, all living in midtown Manhattan and already which has its own powers. Their origin, astronauts exposed to and altered by cosmic rays during spaceflight, was then told in flash on pages 9-13. The rest of the issue follows the cover, showing the Fantastic Four fighting a giant monster controlled by the Mole Man.
The first drawn page shows the flaming Four symbol in the sky, echoing how Reed Richards fired the flare to summon the other three in Fantastic Four #1. The people of Duckburg look up at the sky in awe.
As in the original comic, the first character we meet is the Invisible Woman. Minnie Mouse is watching TV with Clarabelle the Cow, but when she sees a signal in the sky, she disappears.
Next comes The Thing. In Fantastic Four #1, Ben Grimm is introduced to a clothing store, wearing a thick coat to disguise his stone skin. When his true appearance is revealed, he goes on a rampage. Meanwhile, Donald Duck is just ironing his clothes (which are torn since his transformation). But when he sees the signal, he runs out the door, tearing it off its hinges on the way.
Next, the Human Torch. The fool says there is a flame while working on the car with Horace Horsecollar. He doesn't accidentally melt a car like Johnny Storm did, but he flies past the barbecue competition and gives everyone a helping spark.
Obviously, this uses up The Goofy Torch's energy, but don't worry, super flexible Mickey catches him as he falls. With the Fantastic Four assembled, the comic teases an origin story yet to come.
While he doesn't appear in this preview, Mickey's nemesis Pete will apparently play the role of the Mole Man. So what is this version of the universe the ever-envious Dr. Doom, who blames his old schoolmate Reed Richards for his scarred face? Maybe Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Walt Disney first of all creation (moved by Mickey).
“Marvel & Disney: What If…? Mickey & Friends Became the Fantastic Four” #1 releases in print and digital January 8, 2025.
