Ronald D. Moore Battlestar Galactica the remake was a show that was all about planning. Not only did the showrunner have big plans (more or less) for his modern sci-fi mythology from the start, but characters like Commander Adam had to constantly scheme and plan to stay one step ahead of the dastardly Cylons.
However, as it turns out, Adama actor Edward James Olmos isn't much of a planner in real life, often making spontaneous decisions to bring his on-screen characters to life. Unfortunately, this led to an expensive Battlestar Galactica a mistake during the episode “Maelstrom” in which the actor accidentally destroyed a $200,000 model.
Adam gets angry
For the story of this insanely expensive Battlestar Galactica error, you'll need important context to make sense. Maelstrom features a detailed model of Commander Adam's ancient sailing ship in his quarters, but this is more of a Starbuck episode… at least until the heartbreaking moment when the fan-favorite character appears to die (don't worry, she gets better… sort of ). Starbuck was basically the daughter Adam never had, and the episode ends with a sad Adam. destroying model ship before it collapsed in uncontrollable tears.
This is undoubtedly one of the most powerful moments Battlestar Galactica history. It's also the scene that contains the show's costliest mistake. in 2012 Edward James Olmos revealed a secret to Planet Comicon attendees: namely, he completely improvised this scene. Simply put, Adam destroys his model ship (unlike Captain Picard who destroys his model ships First contact) was never included in the script, and the actor decided to do it immediately.
For Olmos, this kind of killer improvisation was just another day at officeand considering how great the scene turned out, it's obvious that the actor's instincts for the scene were impeccable. And as far as he knew, the model ship he destroyed was made by the production staff, so it didn't matter that he destroyed it as safely as if Roslin had pushed it out of the airlock. What the actor didn't know at the time, however, was that the model had been borrowed from a museum by the show and was valued at $200,000.
This expensive Battlestar Galactica the mistake is more understandable when you consider that most of the time the show used their cheap replicas instead of the real model. That being said, Olmos didn't actually sound all that pathetic as he told the tale to convention attendees. According to the actor, his response to news that he had destroyed the one-off (and wildly expensive) model was: “Why did you put it in that scene? I've just been told that my (character's) daughter is dead, what did you expect?”
There is some logic to his answer! Perhaps the manufacturers thought it was expensive Battlestar Galactica mistake, but Olmos saw it as an opportunity to create an unforgettable moment for his character. It wasn't the first time the actor delivered killer improv, and it certainly wasn't the last. Or, as the Calonians might say, it's all happened before, and it's all going to happen again.
