Studio executives and fans alike have high hopes that it Daredevil: Born Again will be the smash hit Marvel that Disney+ desperately needs. There are plenty of reasons to hope the show succeeds, including the return of the main cast that made the original Netflix show a fan favorite. However, the biggest reason for me to hope is this Daredevil: Born Again will be rated TV-MA, which reflects Disney's belated desire to diversify its MCU content.
Daredevil Needs To Be Dark
Part of what created Netflix Daring what made the show such a hit is that it wasn't afraid to get really dark when needed. We had gory scenes like the Kingpin killing a flunky with a car door and the Punisher killing almost everyone who comes at him on Riker's Island. When Daredevil: Born Again was first announced, fans were worried about it Disney would take a lighter, more kid-friendly approach to this brutal franchise. The TV-MA rating means it may be as brutal as before, but the main reason I'm excited is that for the first time in a long time, Disney is willing to make different shows for different types of audiences.
Well, before that Daredevil: Born Again was produced, and before Disney+ even existed, the House of Mouse released Marvel content through various platforms aimed at very specific audiences. Younger fans had similar shows Cloak and Dagger for free form and Runaways switched on Hulu whereas older fans ABC got more movie-like content with series like Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter. Netflix became the de facto home of mature Marvel content, providing similar shows Daring and Jessica Jones which frankly couldn't be easily shown anywhere outside of streaming.
However, when Disney+ came along, all the shows were aimed at the same average audience. Agents of SHIELD were aimed at. This is not inherently a bad thing. Agents of SHIELD was a very solid show in its own right, and early Disney+ shows like WandaVision and Bows proved that the studio still has some great stories to tell. However, it was clear that adult content was not the focus after Disney 'accidentally' uploaded a censored episode The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and then shows a content warning to all its legacy Netflix MCUs.
The New Era of Disney/Marvel TV-MA
Now Daredevil: Born Again Earning a TV-MA rating is proof that Disney is willing to step in to create adult content. of course Echo the miniseries was also on TV-MA, but it felt more like a marketing angle for a show that flew under most people's radar. Born againis still Marvel fans' most anticipated Disney+ show, and letting such a popular character get a few more R-rated adventures means the streamer is finally ready to make more mature shows for a more mature audience.
If Daredevil: Born Again proves popular on Disney+, we might get more TV-MA Marvel content. For example, if the Punisher got his own revival series, Frank Castle would definitely need this more mature rating to properly punish his enemies. Other familiar characters like Elektra and even Ghost Rider would benefit from a solo series unencumbered by the need to create family-friendly programming. Also, considering we'll probably never get that Blade movie, this show could be reborn as Disney+ with all the fun and violent gore of Wesley Snipes' original movies.
Admittedly, this could all be putting the cart before the horse (or should it be down the hall before the hero?). Daredevil: Born Again may very well be released on Disney+, especially after the show had to fire its existing writers and directors to creatively overhaul the entire series. Still, hope is eternal, and we can only hope that House of Mouse embraces more of the diversity of stories that have always made Marvel great. Otherwise, Netflix The Marvel era may be remembered as the last time the franchise was willing to swing for the streaming fences.
