The 'Scream 7' director is seemingly breaking his contract with the latest IG post

Kevin Williamsonnewly appointed director “Scream 7” allegedly breached his contract with production companies Spyglass Media Group and Paramount Pictures by sharing an Instagram post about the film.

After Wes Craven's death in 2015, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillette took over the helm for Scream (2022) and Scream VI (2023).

In March 2024, Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original 1996 film, was confirmed to direct the seventh installment in the Scream franchise.

Williamson took to Instagram on Tuesday, January 7, to celebrate the start of filming on the highly anticipated sequel, despite apparent restrictions on public comment. His post included a photo of the movie slated “Day One” and a caption expressing his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity.

“I shouldn't be posting about 'Scream' and I hope @spyglassmediagr and @paramountpics forgive me,” Williamson began. “But when you're having one of the best days of your life, it's really hard to keep it to yourself.”

Williamson, who stepped into the director's chair after the controversy surrounding “Scream 7” and its stars Nev Campbell and Melissa Barrerawent on to describe the first day of filming as “extraordinary”. He praised the cast and crew, saying they “brought their 'A' game and had my back every step of the way.”

In his heartfelt post, Williamson also paid tribute to the late Wes Craven, the original director of the Scream franchise. “I am so grateful for this opportunity and for Wes Craven, who was in my mind through it all. His profound influence on my life and career is endless. What a day! I can't wait for tomorrow!”

The Instagram post has drawn attention to a potential breach of contractual agreements, as directors and crew members are often prohibited from revealing details about production projects. However, fans have responded enthusiastically, with many expressing their excitement Campbell's return as Sidney Prescott and the continuation of the franchise under Williamson.

Barrera, who starred in “Scream” (2022) and “Scream VI” (2023), was fired from the franchise after posting controversial posts on social media that Spyglass deemed “anti-Semitic.” The production company released a statement mentioning the decision, saying:

“We have zero tolerance for anti-Semitism or hate speech in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, holocaust mutilation or anything that clearly crosses the line into hate speech.”

The post that led to Barrera's termination compared the situation in Gaza to a concentration camp, stating: “Gaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp. Putting everyone together with nowhere to go, no electricity, no water. In addition, she wrote in capital letters: “THIS IS GENOCIDE AND ETHNIC CLEANSING.”
