Brooke Shields opened up about something very personal, very surprising and very unfortunate.
In a new memoir — Brooke Shields Isn't Allowed to Age: Reflections on Aging as a Woman, which goes on sale Jan. 14 — the actress/model delves into unexpected trauma experienced by professionals in health.
Specifically, Shields says she was forced to undergo an unwanted and unnecessary vaginal rejuvenation procedure at some point in the recent past.
“I would be lying if I said I wasn’t embarrassed to share this very intimate information.” Shields writes in an excerpt published by Us Weekly.
“But if we want to change the way we approach and talk about women's health, then we need to address uncomfortable but very real questions.”
The star then explained how she lay down for lip reduction surgery during quarantine due to discomfort, irritation and bleeding.
However, during the post-operative examination with her surgeon, she said she learned that he Also performed a vaginal rejuvenation procedure while she was under the knife…without her consent.
In the book, Shields apologizes to readers who might find the story “too graphic or just TMI, as some generations still call it,” but said his intentions were pure.
“Shame is no longer an option,” she wrote.
Nor is it possible to remain silent in the face of such a violation.
Regarding the surgeon and what he chose to do to her, Shields says:
“He informed me that he had added a small bonus. It felt like such an invasion – such a bizarre kind of rape.
Shields recalled that the doctor “legitimately and proudly explained to me that he, you know, added a little double,” telling the aforementioned tabloid that she was “stunned” by that logic.
“There was no indication of this need to be tighter, smaller, firmer or younger, especially there,” Shields added of that body part, noting that she and her gynecologist were furious.
Now 59, Shields didn't even tell her husband Chris Henchy about what happened “for a very long time.”
But now she's going public with her story to raise awareness about women's autonomy when it comes to personal health.
This isn't the first time the celebrity has spoken openly about the subject of aging either; or the subject of how women are perceived in society.
“Isn't it interesting how we even have to say, okay, well, if you're going to age, you're going to have to do it gracefully,” she told Allure last year. “Excuse me, but fuck off.”
