Skeleton Crew's Brutus continues the sad tradition of Star Wars

Brutus is a stunning feat of character design. As Shistavanen, he basically looks like a badass werewolf, as his race came from a background image from the famous cantina sequence in A New Hope (which was basically just Halloween mask makeup effects legend Rick Baker used for the scene). Since the Skeleton Crew only really shows character in small doses and mostly in the dark, it's the combination of the wolf mask and the many chest-mounted weapons that make Brutus' design heavy. Far from looking like a Halloween mask, he appears to be a genuine alien wolf pirate worthy of the cruelty inspired by the name Brutus.

However, Brutus' character doesn't really do much in “Skeleton Crew” and mostly exists to look cool as the leader of a ruthless band of pirates who pillage, pillage, and singing space pirate shanties. Otherwise, Brutus isn't a very good villain; after all, he's beaten and beaten several times by a bunch of kids before being brutally killed by his former captain by trapping him under a crane.

However, this should not come as a surprise. In fact, the character of Brutus is part of a long-standing Star Wars practice in which the franchise introduces a radically nasty and intriguing character with a murderous design, who is then killed off almost immediately without doing anything. I'm talking characters like Boba Fett, Darth Maul, Captain Phasma, Grievous, and Dexter Jetster (come on, you know he must have bit the dust). Granted, some of those deaths were later glossed over, but the point remains: Star Wars is as much about the characters at the heart of its stories as it is about the one-offs who show up for a brief moment, look great, and then stands out. .

In fact, in the same episode in which Brutus is killed, his successor appears to have appeared. I'm talking about Neal's dad Nola, one of the hottest new Star Wars characters in years (Quima aside), with those giant fangs and his loving family. If he is killed, we will revolt.

The season 1 finale of Star Wars: The Skeleton Squad will take place on January 14, 2025 at 6pm PST on Disney+.
