Lord Ivar Mountbatten gaining attention as a contestant Traitors — but what does he have to do with the royal family?
Alan Cummings announced about Today's show In June 2024, which would be Mountbatten joining season 3 competition series alongside reality TV veterans Boston Rob Mariano, Daniela Reyes, Tom Sandoval, Krisella Stause and more, among a total of 21 contestants. While Mountbatten has not found fame on television, he has become widely known as a member of the royal family and the first openly gay man.
Ivars, who was born in March 1963, is a son David Mountbattenwho is the 3rd Marquess of Milford Haven, and Janet Mercedes Bryce. Through his father, Ivars is a grandson Prince George of Battenberg and a great-great-grandson Queen Victoria. Ivar's father was a cousin Prince Philip who got married Queen Elizabeth II in 1947, making Ivars Philip's first cousin, Elizabeth's third cousin, and second cousin King Charles III.
After his father's death in 1970, Ivars has been open about how he viewed Philip as a father figure.
“In later years I would sit with him and ask endless questions about my father. It was wonderful to have someone who could tell me all about him,” he said Telegraph in April 2021. “Prince Philip was a wonderful listener; you could tell him anything as long as you were honest and direct. He would love to hear your thoughts. But if he had any advice he thought you should hear, he would give it to you.
As a member of the extended family, Ivar has no royal duties. Previously worked as a geologist and businessman. Ivars is also a former director of SCL Group, which was a strategic communication company. While Ivar is a member of the royal family, he understands why he is not as involved in royal events as he once was as a child.
“The family has become very large,” he said Tatler in 2019. “When we were younger, we used to go to royal events all the time. But now that everyone has kids, everything is quite rightly slimmed down.”
Although Ivar is not active with the royal family, he has a close relationship with some of them. He has maintained ties with King Charles' younger brother Prince Edward and his wife Duchess Sophia. Ivar is godfather to Edward and Sophie's daughter, Lady Louise Windsor.
Edwards and Sofia are godparents to Ivar's two children – daughters Ella and Alixa, whom he lives with his ex-wife. Penny Mountbatten. (The exes, who divorced in 2011, also share a daughter, Luli.)
Ivars made history in 2016 when he became the first member of the royal family to openly have a same-sex relationship with his current husband. James Coyle. The couple tied the knot in 2018 and were the first members of the British royal family to have a same-sex wedding. Speaking to The Independent in 2023, Ivars said his family had been “incredibly supportive” of his and Coyle's relationship.
