Nosferatu creative team in the creation of Bill Skarsgård's penis prosthesis

Fans will likely never forget Bill Skarsgård's full-frontal moment when the weakened Count Orlok steps in Nosferatu – but the creative team behind the scenes remains just as haunted.

Heavy prosthetics is nothing new for Skarsgård, 34, as he's transformed into various levels of spookiness. creatures in movies like That and Crow. Audiences get their first look at the prosthetic appendage in the third act, when Thomas tries to escape Orlok Castle after realizing he's being fed by an ancient vampire. When he finds his way to the basement, he tries to knock over a sleeping Orlok, but wakes him up. As Thomas runs for his life, Orlok emerges from the sarcophagus, revealing himself from his clothing.

As for why the prosthetic penis was necessary for filming, the head of prosthetic makeup effects designer David White — who created the prop — gave We some insight into the scene.

“(Bill) knew it was coming, and as soon as I saw that frame in frame, I thought, 'Oh no, there are questions about that.' Because until then, no one had said a word,” White said. “It was a creature that transcended Bill's own being… We had to find a way to make the whole body work for the shot where he rises from his sarcophagus. Hoult himself has been open about the awkward moment on set Hell in a recent interview that after he had expressed that he felt the prop pressing against his leg, the director Robert Egger sent him a surprise gift.

White added that Skarsgård tended to stay in character on set and was “quiet and in the shadows, like Orlok.” However, seeing the actor in full costume backstage was far more comical than one would expect.

“When he first went on set, he was half-dressed and then he had runners underneath,” Loader recalled with a laugh.
