Sony's Spider-Man Universe is basically dead. According to reports, the studio is no longer interested in making Spider-Man movies without the web-slinger himselfwhose only appearance in these live-action films was a brief cameo in “Madame Web” as a newborn child.
Of course, that makes sense. This has arguably been the most disastrous attempt at creating a cinematic universe since Universal's Dark Universe. Almost none of Sony's Spider-Man villain movies were loved by critics, audiences, or people in general. True, there are some fans of the “Venom” movies who to do experience some of the weirdest and funniest moments in the superhero movie trilogy, like Venom becoming a gay icon in a nightclub or Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock stepping into a lobster tank. However, you can only go so far with a universe made up almost entirely of comic book villains who are forcibly turned into anti-heroes.
We saw the consequences of this in Kraven the Hunter, the last of Sony's Spider-Man universe films. As our own Whitney Seibold wrote in her review for /Film, the film “is an incoherent, incompetent gallimaufry of worn-out superhero tropes, hastily pushed on an audience the filmmakers know they lost long ago.” But at one point there was a discussion about introducing Venom into this film.
Kraven the Hunter almost showcased Venom…kind of
Despite possibly being the last time Sony makes a Spider-Man movie that doesn't focus entirely on Spider-Man, surprisingly, “Kraven the Huntsman” no connections to other films. There isn't even a post-credits scene to tease the project, which might push audiences for more Kraven. It's a shame, because it would make sense that the only reason to create a cinematic Spider-Man villain without Peter Parker would be to bring them together in a big Sinister Six-style crossover movie.
Unfortunately, that never happened, and aside from a brief and very dumb encounter between Morbius and the Vulture, none of these characters have ever met in Sony's Spider-Man Universe movie. Except it could happen.
Concept artist Jules Darriulat took to Instagram to share a piece of “Kraven the Hunter” concept art in which Sergey Kravinov would meet Venom himself (sort of). The deleted scene shows Venom lying half-dead in some desolate wasteland, surrounded by other dead symbiotes. Given how out of place it might have felt in the main Kraven the Hunter story, it's likely that the cut scene was intended to be part of a scene or nightmare sequence. Unfortunately, we may never know — let alone Venom and Kraven meet.
