Even though it was the first time all living former presidents had gotten together since 2018, Michelle was MIA because she extended her vacation to Hawaii as a CNN anchor. Jeff Zeleny reported at the time.
Although Michelle was missed by his side, Obama proved to be a friendly presence among the nation's former leaders. In memorial images, the 44th president, who shares his daughters Malia26, and Sasha23, with Michelle – spoke animatedly to Trump for several minutes. He also stood to greet former President Bush, who quickly gave him a pat on the stomach before sitting down. A greeting that, naturally, went viral online.
Although she did not attend the memorial, Michelle paid tribute to former President Carter, who died on December 29 at the age of 100, through a joint statement with her husband.
“President Carter taught us all what it means to live a life of grace, dignity, justice, and service,” the couple wrote in a joint statement shared on Instagram on December 29. “Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to the Carter family, and all those who loved and learned from this remarkable man.
