On Buffy the Vampire Slayerthe titular character has faced many tough decisions over the years, but perhaps the hardest was choosing who owns her heart: Angel, a tormented vampire with a soul, or Spike, a badass vamp who reluctantly joined Scooby's gang and even got a soul of his own.

There is still debate throughout the community as to which choice is the best, with fan shippers favoring either Bangle (Buffy/Angela) or Spuffy (Spike/Buffy). While fans may never get a definitive answer, Buffy actress Sarah Michelle Gellar did. In an old Reddit Ask Me Anything thread, she chose Angel over Spike.

Buffy, Angel and Spike

If you've never watched a Buffy episode, or you've just caught the occasional rerun, you may need some background on how Angel and Spike became romantic leads for Gellar's character. In short, Angel was her love interest from season one, and the show shamelessly plumbed the depths of romantic melodrama with a star-studded story of a vampire and a vampire slayer falling in love. Spike, meanwhile, was introduced as an enemy and former associate of Angel in Season 2, and began developing feelings for Buffy in Season 5, two seasons after Angel left Sunnydale for her spinoff.

Buffy didn't see much of Angel (outside of the occasional cameo) after her spinoff started, which is how Spike became a mainstay in the cast. Resident Cordelia had also left Buffy and joined Angela as another familiar face in Los Angeles at the venue Angel. Because of this, showrunner Joss Whedon brought Marsters on board as a regular Buffyseason four to fill the hilariously conflicted role that Cordelia once did, though the evil vamp eventually developed feelings for Buffy, culminating in their destructive (literally and metaphorically) relationship in season 6.

ironically, Buffy's final episode did nothing to quell speculation about whether Sarah Michelle Gellar's character should end up with Angel or Spike. At the beginning of the episode, she has a heart-to-heart with Angel about her future, confirming that Spike is not a “friend” but “he's in my heart”. She admits that she's not ready for a relationship yet and wasn't thinking that far ahead, but she hints that she and Angel could still have a future together.

This scene might suggest that Buffy will ultimately choose Angel over Spike, but things get more complicated when Spike sacrifices himself to save the world. Just before he dies, Buffy tells Spike “I love you”, to which he replies “no you don't, but thanks for saying that”. There you have it, folks: in the same Buffy episode, our Slayer implied a romantic future with Angel and pledged her love to Spike, leaving fans to forever question who she should have ended up with.

Buffy actor though Sarah Michelle Gellar believes Angel is the only logical choice over Spike. In her Reddit AMA, one fan asked “Spike or Angel” and she spelled out “ANGEL.” Another Redditor later asked the same question, and she reaffirmed her answer: “still an angel.”

Hearing that the woman who brought Buffy Summers to life prefers Angel over Spike might be enough to end the ongoing fan fight over the matter. However, it's likely that most fans will continue to choose their battle lines based on everything from which actor gave the best performance to who had the best hair. That last one is a little unfair, though… as all Spuffy fans know, Captain Peroxide has a better job to do, and we'll always bet that bleach blonde bear will win Buffy's heart over Boreanaz's bloody bloodsucker.
