Man arrested for setting woman on fire in North Carolina

A 23-year-old North Carolina man has been charged with attempted murder after a horrific attack days before Christmas. Jamie Raizia Griffin has been in police custody since Friday, December 27. Police say Griffin doused the woman in gasoline and set her on fire on Dec. 16. Ashanti Downeyreceived second and third degree burns on the right side of her body, with CBS17.

The incident occurred in Harnett County in Sandford, North Carolina near Barbecue Church Road. She walked down the road to the Dollar General. Sheriff's deputies initially believed that three people Ashanti did not know, including Jamie, pulled over the car they were riding in, doused him with a flammable liquid and set him on fire using a cigarette.

However, investigators have since revealed that Ashanti and Jamie Raizia Griffin were living together when he carried out the attack. In addition, according to CBS17cops no longer think anyone other than Griffin is involved.

What will happen next?

Ashanti Downey remains in critical but stable condition. He was reportedly treated by medical professionals at Central Carolina Hospital before being transferred to a local burn center.

Meanwhile, Jaimie will remain locked up without bond all weekend. This is because domestic violence element of his charges and knowing Downey before the attack. The 23-year-old is charged with attempted first-degree murder, felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and adult misconduct against a female. He will appear in Harnett District Court on Monday, December 30, CBS17 reports.

At this time, police say there are no witnesses to the incident and it is unclear if Ashanti is able to communicate verbally or physically.
