In the latest series Wife's sisters, Mary Brown revealed the distribution of her family's assets, which she claimed was not always fair.
“His main thing then was that I would get two acres. Two acres,” Meri, 53, told a friend Jen on the Sunday, Jan. 19, episode of the TLC series, which claims that the ex-husband Cody Brown never intended to give her an equal share of their family's Coyote Pass estate. “He says, 'Well, you don't need that much because you don't have that many kids.'
Jen pointed out that Meri “paid the same” for the plot of land in Flagstaff, Arizona, despite only having one child, Leonwith Cody, 55.
“I don't know if they don't remember, like when our funds were together and the family funds that I helped with went to the kids' college, went to the property,” Meri explained. “It went to everything. We had a family foundation.
Jen quickly reminded Meri that not only did she put money into the family bank when she was married to Cody, but that money “paid for most of the kids' college, but not for Leon.”
Jen claimed that the family trust “applied to most of the kids' cars, but not Leon's,” which Meri confirmed. “I paid for Leon's college,” Mary said, adding that she also paid for her child's “car payments” and did not use the family allowance.
Meri admitted, “I really don't know how much the family fund actually paid for the other children's school or cars, but I do know that my child's school was not taken care of by the family fund.”
Although she was married to Cody the longest, Meri claimed that she never received an even share of the money her sister's wives collectively raised for their large family.
“What Cody actually said was, 'Because I only have one child, I don't have an equal share of the property,'” Meri claimed, again mentioning the sale of their shared land.
Mary and Cody were legally married from 1990 to 2014. They broke up so Cody could marry a fourth wife Robin Brown and legally adopts her three children from a previous relationship. Meri and Cody remained in a spiritual union until his confirmed their divorce in January 2023.
With Leona, Cody welcomed six children with the two Janelle Brown and Christine Brown before their respective divorces. (Jenelle announced her divorce in December 2022, while Kristine left the large family in 2021.)
Cody is still married to Robin, 46, with whom he has three adopted children and two biological children.
“We had to take care of 18 children. You know, that's just water under the bridge,” Cody told the cameras on Sunday's show while discussing asset allocation. “I don't even want to discuss it. Meri can complain all she wants about what happened.
While Cody tried to ignore Meri's claims, she remained convinced that she deserved the money from their Coyote Pass property — just like Jenelle. (Christine gave her part of the land Robyn and Kody after their divorce and withheld money from the sale of her Arizona home.)
“I invested a lot in this marriage emotionally, financially (and) personally. I didn't get anything from it, like alimony or anything. And I'm not looking for that,” concluded Meri. “So I think it's fair to invest in property (I get). I think it's fair that I at least give it up.
In another episode, Cody met with a realtor to list Coyote Pass, but didn't keep Jenelle or Mary. Meanwhile, the women both retained attorneys to try and protect their land rights.
Wife's sisters airs on TLC Sundays at 10 p.m. ET.
