Kelly Stafford wonders if husband Matthew is nearing NFL retirement

Kelly Stafford praise your husband Matthew Staffordafter being defeated in the divisional round of the playoffs by the Los Angeles Rams — and pondering a possible exit.

“There are not enough words to express how proud I am,” Kelly, 35, wrote Instagram on Monday, January 20. “I joke about us being old and tired, but honestly, I could never get tired of watching you or our girls cheering their dad on.”

Kelly also shared a carousel of photos from Sunday's January 19 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. In one picture, Kelly and Matthew's daughters surround the Rams quarterback, 36, as he leans down to talk to them. (Kelly and Matthew, who married in 2015, have four daughters: twins Chandler and Sawyer, born in March 2017, Hunter, born in August 2018, and Tyler, born in June 2020.)

“I wonder if this is the end or not… guess we'll find out,” Kelly concluded.

After the loss, Matthews said he would need time to think about his future in the NFL. “But I think I played pretty good ball,” Matthew told reporters on Sunday. When asked if he still has football left in him, Matthew said: “Of course he likes it.”

Before the game, Kelly and their four daughters were seen giving Matthew words of encouragement on the field. Matthew got down on one knee and hugged his daughters while Kelly bent down in a crotch. “Pregame group hug for Stafford family,” NFL official Instagram the account wrote a post on Sunday.

Kelly and their daughters have been by Matthew's side during the NFL season, even while fighting illness. After the Rams' game against the Minnesota Vikings on Jan. 13 was rescheduled, the Rams organization arranged for the team and their families to travel to the game together.

“We were sick on that flight,” Kelly admitted on the Jan. 15 episode of her “Morning After” podcast. “There was a huge guilt factor I'm told, “Should we be on this plane right now because everyone around us and everyone who has to play this game?”

Before Kelly and her daughters boarded the planeshe turned to other members of the Aries family for advice. “They said, 'Get on that plane.' We all have to be together,” Kelly said. “It was so incredible for me to hear because it was a bit like, 'Should I stay with my kids?'”

Matthew also insisted that Kelly and the girls go to the match with him. “Matthew said, 'No, we'll do whatever it takes.' We all get on this plane. We're going to be together right away,” Kelly said.

Despite her hesitation, Kelly was ultimately glad she attended the game, which the Rams won. “This win, besides the Super Bowl (in 2022), was probably my favorite win as a Ram,” Kelly said.
