Ryan Gosling to star in Sean Levy's Star Wars

This is no drill: Ryan Gosling (“Barbie,” “The Fall Guy”) is coming to a galaxy far, far away. Although much remains unanswered, the Oscar-nominated actor is currently in talks to star in one of Disney and Lucasfilm's upcoming “Star Wars” films. According to The Hollywood Reporteroutlet reports that Gosling is being tapped to star in Sean Levy's upcoming film based on the legendary sci-fi franchise. Whether you feel good or bad about it, it's very important.

Levy's mysterious Star Wars movie was first developed in 2022 and is reportedly working on a script with Jonathan Tropper, with whom he worked on Netflix's “The Adam Project.” It was initially reported that the film could start production after he finishes his commitments on “Deadpool 3” or “Deadpool & Wolverine”. Given the success of that film, which is now the biggest R-rated film in history with more than $1.3 billion, it's possible that Levy's Star Wars project has moved up the priority list. According to THR, Gosling's interest only fueled this. It is now likely to be the next film in the series, which will be in production as early as this fall.

Plot details are still completely under wraps, but the report suggests that it's meant to be a stand-alone adventure. So that rules it out as related the new “Star Wars” trilogy developed by Simon Kinberg (“Dark Phoenix”, “Star Wars Rebels”). It's also unclear who Gosling will play. Levy is also set to produce the film through his 21 Laps production company with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

The focus is on the future of Star Wars

The last film of the franchise to be honored on the silver screen was The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Although it was a financial success, it ended the sequel trilogy on a mixed note with an increasingly divisive middle record to follow. “The Last Jedi.” Since then Lucasfilm and Disney developed many “Star Wars” projectsfinishing behind only Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian and Grogu. Set in the same universe as Disney+'s The Mandalorian, the film hits theaters in May 2026.

Gosling is one of Hollywood's biggest stars and “Barbie” is one of the biggest movies of all time. The actor won an Oscar for his role as Ken in the film, which only increased his star power. Some of his other notable credits include 'La La Land', 'The Notebook' and 'Blade Runner 2049'. Coupled with Levi's ability to please people, that certainly makes it an attractive combination in the eyes of Disney and Lucasfilm. Star Wars could use some solid hits right now.

In addition to this project, “Clone Wars” maestro Dave Filoni is developing a movie that will bring together all the shows in the “Mandalorian” universe. James Mangold (“Logan”) is also working on a film that will show the beginnings of the Jedi Order. In addition, Daisy Ridley will return to the film, where she will build a new Jedi order after the continuation of the trilogy. Whether all of them will make it across the finish line remains to be seen.

How soon could this film see the light of day? The two “Star Wars” movies were originally slated to arrive in 2026. However, Lucasfilm pulled the December 2026 film from the calendar, but the studio is targeting a December 2027 release date for the franchise's mystery title. Let's see how everything turns out.

Sean Levy's Star Wars movie doesn't have a release date, but stay tuned.
