Mike McMahan joined the legions of Star Trek fans who mourned the premature cancellation of the event. Lower deckshis seminal animated comedy that has always been the best part of the NuTrek era. In a recent interview with TrekMovie, he confirmed that he plans to bide his time and make a serious effort to get his show back with the help of these same fans. It would do more than bring back the killer comedy… a comeback Lower decks would, in many ways, save Star Trek from the most dangerous enemy it has ever faced: Paramount.
In the same interview, Mike McMahan indicated that the end Lower decks there's no end to the new content for the franchise, mentioning how excited he is to see Article 31, Starfleet Academyand subsequent seasons Strange new worlds. Why then do we boldly declare that it will require a return? Lower decks to save Star Trek? Frankly, we don't need the Betazoid's telepathic powers to know that The most important thing the executives have no idea what they are doing with this beloved franchise.
The future of Star Trek
Let's start with an important disclaimer: Strange new worlds is a near-perfect show, and we join Mike McMahan in his enthusiasm for it. However, the future of the entire franchise cannot rest on the well-mannered shoulders of Ansom Mount's Captain Peak, and it's important that Paramount focus on future works to keep the franchise healthy. Unfortunately, everything we know about the current productions points to an overwhelming need for something, anything, to save Star Trek from its current creators.
Article 31 It looks like there will be a mistake for a number of reasons, including the fact that the series was planned around the Oscar-winning actor Michelle Yeo was suddenly downgraded to a TV movie that nobody really cares about. Once it's released, it'll be hard to get a feel for new characters we'll likely never see again. And like many Trek fans, we're not entirely comfortable with the idea of Chapter 31 for the franchise, as such a rogue, intense Starfleet organization seems at odds with the franchise's entire idealism.
Starfleet Academy has built a pretty great cast, but ultimately it's an offshoot of Discoverya show that turned off so many fans that Paramount canceled its once flagship series early. On top of that and untitled Office– similar series, the only known production horizon is a similar untitled Star Trek origin film that chronicles humanity's early encounters with aliens and the formation of the Federation. Considering we've already covered that First contact and Companyit's pretty obvious that Paramount is willing to cannibalize their favorite shows and movies in a desperate attempt to make a new movie.
How Mike McMahan Can Save Star Trek
All of which brings us to why Mike McMahon's plans might be the only thing that can save Star Trek. Now that Paramount has made it clear we'll never get one The legacy of Star Trek show everyone wants Lower decks remains the only NuTrek content that wants to constantly interact with our favorite classic characters. After all, this show brought back everyone from Garak to Bashir to Tom Parise and more LPG the bad boy he leans on.
And even if you don't like Mike McMahon's sense of humor, it's always been clear Lower decks created by people who grew up as fans of Gene Roddenberry's hit franchise. These writers consistently manage to tell new stories while delving into old lore in a way that doesn't disrupt the existing canon. It might not sound that hard on paper, but when you look at all the canon-shaking going on Discovery and even Strange new worldsit's easier to respect the hard work that goes into each frame Lower decks.
The return of this show could save Star Trek. In fact, it looks more and more like it might be the only one that can do it. As much as we're looking forward to the laughs Tawny Newsome will deliver on her upcoming live trek show (the aforementioned Office-similar series), we can't wait to see her return to the rebellious Mariner. Judging by the many mistakes Paramount has made with this franchise over the years, it's clear they could learn something from Mariner about breaking the rules, especially if it meant bringing us back (as Lower decks so often) until the Golden Age of Star Trek.
