The city of New Orleans is in shock after a tragedy on New Year's Day.
At least 10 people died and more than 30 others were injured after a man intentionally drove a pickup truck into a crowd on famed Bourbon Street, authorities say.
The incident took place around 3:15 a.m. local time on January 1 and ended with the man, whom the FBI identified as 42 years old. Shamsud Din Jabbarcrashing his truck and exchanging gunfire with police, according to NBC News. The shooting ended with the death of the attacker and the injuries of two officers, although both remain in stable condition, according to police.
New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick described the violent act as “very intentional behavior” and clarified that it was “not a DUI situation.”
“This man was trying to crush as many people as possible,” she said during a January 1 press conference. “He was determined to create the carnage and damage he caused.”
