One legitimate fear parents have is that their child or children will grow up to be a full-blown psychopath with a penchant for antisocial behavior, violence, or both. About Melinda Page Hamilton's Abbey Bell in the 2020s Monster momsher worst nightmare comes true when her 16-year-old son Jacob's (Bailey Edwards) behavior becomes so erratic that she decides to set up an elaborate network of nanny cams in her home to document his every move. Using the found footage method of filming, Tucia Lyman's Monster Mothers Focuses on the lives of mother and son through fragmented vlogs, trying to determine if Jacob's behavior is the result of nature, nurture or some combination of the two.
While I really enjoyed sitting through monster mothers, It's one of those horror thrillers that I'll probably only watch once because of its heavy subject matter, but I couldn't recommend it more if you're looking for a found footage record that will distract you until you want to install cameras in every room of your house the next time you the child engages in questionable behavior.
Abbey has every right to be paranoid
Monster Mothers is framed through the perspective of Abbey Bell, a middle-aged single mother who has reason to believe her son Jacob is a textbook psychopath. Fearing that his behavior will eventually escalate to a school shooting, Abbey grows increasingly frustrated as Jacob—among his documented outbursts of rage—does exceptionally well at school, has a tight-knit group of friends, and appears from the outside to be a run-of-the-mill an angsty teenager by most conventional standards.
Uploading her vlogs to a cloud server as a means of warning other parents living in similar circumstances, Abbey tells her viewers that Jacob has outgrown his therapists and knows how to act normally in social situations because he has mastered the art of acting, for example “False Jacob” whenever he needs to be followed. Never showing receipts for her claims, Abbey often reviews home movies from when Jacob was a child in which he is accused of killing the family pet and abusing children his own age.
While Jacob exhibits impulsive and abnormal behavior such as throwing bricks from a busy overpass to traffic below (for fun) or creating Jack-Styl's home movies of friends wearing a dog shock collar definitely seem like he's taking a liking to his mother for always keeping him at arm's length.
Nature, nurture or both?
Which makes Monster Mothers What makes this a fascinating watch is how Abbey is far from a believable character, despite the fact that she records every interaction she has with her son against his knowledge. Abbey, whose fears for her son are well-founded (if a little exaggerated), also have a number of unforced mental illnesses, the result of past traumas involving her older brother, who behaved in a manner similar to Jacob when he was just a teenager Abbey's camera footage is also quite the story in the sense that her medicine chest is full of prescriptions that she may or may not take as directed, and she also has quite a drinking habit, which results in her going out on sofa on more than one occasion.
Also, whenever Abbey's mother or therapist suggests that she might be overreacting to Jacob's morbid curiosity about dissecting animals or installing stocks on his Airsoft gun, she completely shuts down because she's convinced her son is a psychopath and unwilling to hear Any input that suggests otherwise.
Abbey has already figured it out, and you'll find out if she's at least a little bit responsible for Jacob's escalating behavior.
You'll be left guessing until the credits roll
Family dynamics Monster Mothers is a treasure trove, showing a completely dysfunctional family dynamic that makes you wonder who's really in the wrong. There will be times when you find Jacob's behavior justified because of his mother's treatment of him – he just wants to play video games and cause mischief with his friends without thinking about the consequences, while his mother is constantly on the sidelines because she thinks he's a mass in the making of murderers. His outbursts could probably be written off as hormonal or reactive because he knows his mother thinks he's a problem child, and it's up to the viewer to figure out which version of Jacob we're actually seeing on screen.
When Monster Mothers Get your third act and you're left with even more questions about Abbey and Jacob's relationship as the questions continue to escalate. While a clearer picture of Jacob emerges through it Found footageAbbey's approach to parents only continues to make the situation even more volatile.
Streaming Mom's Mother Monster
Monster Mothers Offers a disturbing insight into the life of a mother who loves her son unconditionally, but whose actions may be an unwitting contributing factor to the problems she faces.
Is Abbey an innocent victim being manipulated by her 16-year-old psychopathic son? Or is Jacob a misunderstood teenager on the verge of snapping because he knows his mother has already made up his mind?
