The Marvel Cinematic Universe took a short hiatus in 2024; the only entries were the loosely related “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the “Hawkeye” spinoff show “Echo,” and witch Disney+ series “Agatha All Along” (along with the third and final season of the animated multiverse anthology “What If…?”).
But now, in 2025, the MCU is surging back into full force, starting with “Captain America: Brave New World.” After the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) has officially stepped into the role of Captain America in the fourth film of the franchise. Sam is about to find himself caught up in an international conspiracy of Hulk supporting characters from President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (Harrison Ford), aka Red Hulkto the long-lost twisted scientist Samuel Sterns/Leader (Tim Blake Nelson).
So, of course, it's time for a movie synergy. Sam is Captain America in Jed McKay's movie “The Avengers” right now (which just recruited a surprise member from the Spider-Man corner of the world). In January 2025, according to the writer J. With the departure of Michael Straczynski, the Captain America comic was rebooted as Sam Wilson: Captain America, shifting the focus from Steve Rogers to Sam.
Greg Pak and Evan Narcissus with Eder Mesias on art duties, “Sam Wilson: Captain America” clearly invites comparisons to “Brave New World”, especially since the Red Hulk is a guest star.
Marvel has now shared an exclusive and verbatim preview of Sam Wilson: Captain America #2 with /Film. Check out Taurin Clarke's drawing of the book's stars squabbling on the cover below:
Josiah X returns in Marvel's Sam Wilson: Captain America
“Sam Wilson: Captain America” no. 1 ended with Sam and the Red Hulk about to do battle, which is where the preview pages show up. Sam uses both his shield and his spiritual connection with the birds to defend against the power of the Red Hulk. Behind Sam is his cousin Billie, who seems to be one of the main supporting characters in the book.
Next we see Sam imprisoned by Dennis Harmon, who was introduced last issue as “the richest man in the Southwest” and who supposedly wants to reduce poverty and hunger with floating platform farms. Of course, it seems that Harmon was too good to be true. Don't worry because Josiah X is on the scene to save Sam.
Josiah is the son of Isaiah Bradley, the first black super soldier (and played by Carl Lumbly in the MCU). Josiah was genetically engineered to be a super soldier like his father, but he is very much his own. The “X” surname isn't just an alias for a superhero; Josiah is a Muslim and his name is a tribute to Malcolm X (who used the “X” to stand for a surname that was lost to them when their ancestors were enslaved in America).
There's no word on Josiah popping up in Brave New World, but his father is going to make an appearance (and apparently he'll be set up to assassinate Ross). Before Marvel fans can enter this brave new world, “Sam Wilson: Captain America” can overwhelm them.
“Sam Wilson: Captain America” no. 2 is scheduled for a print and digital release on February 12, 2025. Captain America: Brave New World opens in theaters on February 14, 2025.
