A funny thing happens when you watch enough horror movies: Ironically, it becomes harder and harder to find a movie that indeed scare you That's because so few spooky movies have truly original ideas behind them, and too many modern scares get lost in a self-congratulatory miasma of Vedonesque allusions and cute gags. Luckily, there's one terrifying modern monster classic you can stream for free: Descentnow available on Tubi.
Descent into terror
Even by horror standards, Descent is a streamlined narrative focusing on the misadventures of a group of women who decide to practice witchcraft in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. The journey could be simple thing to take our main character's mind off the grief she's still processing after the tragic loss of her husband and daughter the previous year, but things take a sideways turn when everyone ends up in an unknown cave system. But soon everyone has a lot more to worry about than getting hurt and getting lost as they run into terrifying goblin-like creatures waiting to kill anything they can lay their hands on.
Part of what makes Descent It is interesting as a horror film that (with the exception of the monstrous “reptiles”) all the characters are played by women. This includes Sean MacDonald (better known for the TV show Ghosts) and Natalia Mendoza (better known for the television show Hotel Babylon). The film also stars Alex Reed (previously known for the TV show Ultimate power), MyAnna Buring (better known for her participation in the Twilight films and A witch series).
From a cashier's point of view Descent is one of those ghost movies that was made on a relatively small budget and turned in (relative to the cost) a big profit. The film had an estimated budget of £3.5 million (or just over $4.3 million) and brought in a monster $57.1 million at the box office. It was enough to warrant a sequel, but Descent 2 ended up being a critical and commercial flop.
Fortunately, the original film has been loved by critics and audiences alike. On Rotten tomatoes, Descent has an 87 percent critical rating, with critics generally praising the film's strong performances and intensely claustrophobic feel. The movie also has a 76 percent viewership rating on Popcornmeter, proving that this isn't one of those horror movies that critics and audiences rave about (like pretty much every other “elevated horror” movie out there).
Serious nightmares
As for me, I loved Descent for many of the same reasons…only women can sound like an offense, but that was done to set this movie apart from other horror movies (like director Neil Marshall's previous Dog soldiers). Throughout the film, the characters really feel like friends whose relationship is constantly being tested in light of their unusual situation. Also, even though they aren't exactly common names, each character feels unique thanks to the creative performances of the actors. .
But real reason to watch Descent is that it's genuinely scary and manages to create a visceral scare by simply tweaking some classic horror formulas into something exciting and new. We have characters who are trapped, but in a mountain cave rather than a cabin in the woods; we have monsters that look like Gollum's third cousin, but are treated with deadly seriousness. Throw in a terrifying opening and a bleak ending (especially in the underrated version) and you've got a movie that's sure to haunt you… one that we really don't recommend trying to watch before bed unless you're ready for something seriously nightmares.
Will you find Descent as horrified as I am, or is this one movie you'd rather throw yourself into an unexplored cave system? You won't know until you do it yourself. However, once this claustrophobic classic gets its claws in, be warned… you won't be able to look away and you never forget what you see.
