Colin Egglesfield encourages others to be proactive about their health after being diagnosed with cancer for the third time.
“It's not a hand you've been dealt because you can't change it. What matters is how you play your cards. I found this quote from an interview I did when I was 25 and it has served me well throughout my life, including recently,” Egglesfield, 51, wrote. Instagram on Tuesday, January 21. “It hasn't been an easy start to this year, but based on what I said in my interview, this is another opportunity to decide who I choose to be in the face of uncertainty and challenges from my latest cancer diagnosis.
Egglesfield noted that doctors “diagnosed his prostate cancer early” a year ago, adding: “(After doing a lot of research and talking to a lot of health professionals, I chose to be proactive and have the surgery. I'm so grateful for the amazing support and the care I have received over the past months from @cityofhopephx, Dr. Gellhaus and all the nurses, doctors and staff who have helped me in this scary time.
As he endured his final health battle, Egglesfield showed support for all who went through a similar challenge.
“Hopefully this is a reminder to everyone that you're not alone in whatever you're going through and that it's important to advocate for yourself and your health, including getting tested, seeking information and asking for help when you need it!” he shared. “And thanks to everyone else who supported me and gave me good wishes! I feel it and every day I am getting healthier and stronger. I'm still a bit sore but I'm making progress and I'm determined to come back stronger and healthier than ever, especially with the help of my sexy walker :).
Egglesfield concluded, “It all begins with the decision to commit to what you decide to be with whatever you encounter. I choose to be ENDURANCE, FAITH, COURAGE, GRACE and INSPIRATION. … And friends, be sure to check your PSA regularly. It saved my life!”
The actor was previously diagnosed with testicular cancer months after he started playing Josh Madden All My Children in 2006. After receiving the news, Egglesfield learned that the cancer had spread to his other testicle, despite undergo surgery to remove it.
“After being diagnosed with it, it's a very scary experience because it's all fear of the unknown,” Egglesfield told Exclusive Us Weekly In 2019, after publicly revealing his health problems. “I didn't know what to expect, so reading about someone who had gone through a similar experience gave me courage and inspiration, knowing that if he could do it and go on and survive and do what he did gave me hope and inspiration that I could do the same.
Egglesfield – who is also known for his roles in Melrose Place, Something Borrowed and The Client List – credited his career for helping him get through the hardest days.
“It really helped me get through the cancer experience because I just knew I had to become a different person. And one of the biggest pieces of advice I got was from my mom when I was diagnosed the second time,” he recalled. “At that point, I literally thought it might be the end. I remember calling her one day, I broke down, and she said, “Colin, you might not make it. But you have to be a warrior. You have to put on the armor and you have to go into battle now, it made me realize, you know what? It's too overwhelming otherwise. So it really helped.”
