In Star Wars, Darth Vader is generally considered one of the most dangerous threats in the galaxy… aside from his mystical powers that allow him to kill anyone who opposes him, the Sith Lord has a well-earned reputation as a fierce warrior who helped destroy the Jedi. However, it is long gone Star Wars Galaxies The MMORPG added a wrinkle to Anakin Skywalker's story that even the biggest fans couldn't have predicted. According to this game, Darth Vader accidentally saved the galaxy by killing Separatist scientists who were about to unleash a new droid army powered by the technology of the killer droid HK-47.
The HK-47 is the key to all of this
The story of Darth Vader accidentally saving the galaxy requires us to go back a long, long time, specifically to the beloved 2003 RPG. Knights of the Old Republic. This game introduced HK-47, a fan favorite droid who loves nothing more than killing people and aliens who opposes him (to this death-loving droid, all biological beings are just “meatbags”). The HK-47 was later returned The Trials of Obi-Wan expansion that added the planet Mustafar and more than 50 quests to the classic MMORPG Star Wars Galaxies.
What does that have to do with it? Darth Vader save the galaxy though? Before he arrived at Mustafar for his epic battle with former mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars Galaxies claims that Separatist scientists discovered the remains of HK-47 and were both horrified and amazed at the droid's ability to kill anything (both droid and organic) in its path when reactivated. After controlling the droid's mind (they were unable to successfully wipe his memory), the scientists stole his chassis and developed the HK-77 droid, far more advanced than anything the prequel Jedi had ever encountered.
The same scientists were going to mass-produce these more advanced droids, and this could be enough to turn the tide in the Clone Wars, allowing the Separatists to defeat the Old Republic once and for all. However, the fate of these Separatists was sealed when Palpatine told the young Anakin Skywalker that the leaders of the Confederacy of Independent Systems were hiding on Mustafar. Now christened Darth Vader, the angry warrior killed these leaders before battling Obi-Wan Kenobi, effectively halting production of the HK-77 and effectively saving the galaxy.
A lost galaxy
Unfortunately Star Wars Galaxies closed many years ago and ever since Disney franchised, all of these old tales have been removed from the canon and relegated to the status of legend. This means that this story of Darth Vader accidentally saving everyone's favorite galaxy far, far away is no longer part of the “official” Star Wars narrative, nor is the story of HK-47's body being found on Mustafar.
However, the droid itself may have returned to official canon… at least from a certain point of view. In Chuck Wendig's book Consequences: The end of the empirethe droid character Mr. Bones breaks down at one point and says, “COMMENT: I SAY WE'LL BREAK THE MEAT BAG AND KEEP YOU OUT OF TROUBLE, MASTER.” It is an echo of how HK-47 spoke in the Knights of the Old Republic games, though it's up to fan interpretation as to whether this is just an easter egg or confirmation that the assassin droid's programming is officially continuing thousands of years later.
For Star Wars fans sick of the Disney era and the burnout of the sequel trilogy, the story of Darth Vader accidentally saving the galaxy is a fond throwback to the days of the Expanded Universe. Back then, talented writers found ever more innovative ways to bring together our favorite characters and stories. However, these days we have to settle for the impression that Disney can deliver a single episode (hello, Skeleton team), which does not succeed in the bed of the Sith, and which makes this particular meatbag infinitely sad at years about the lost creative potential of science fiction's most popular franchise.
