Dave Chappelle returned to Saturday evening live to discuss Diddy, Luigi Mangione, Trump and more for his fourth SNL host a concert.
Politics saw a sharp and vicious shift in 2016 when reality TV star Donald Trump was elected president. With his first victory, the pressure was high Saturday evening live to deliver a product that would calm viewers. SNL creator Lorne Michaels delivered, hiring veteran comedian Dave Chappelle for hosting duties.
Dave assured people everything would be fine and urged them to give Donny a chance. In 2020, Biden was elected and Dave Chappelle returned for another fun evening with a lot less pressure.
It then hosted again in 2022.
Last night Dave came back to SNL for the fourth time alongside Marcello Hernández and musical guest GloRilla and admitted that he initially refused Lorne's call to host right after the election, but he changed his mind and decided to try again.
During his monologue, he discussed the Los Angeles wildfires, Luigi Mangione and much more.
Things also got particularly interesting when Dave talked about Diddy and his so-called “freak-offs.” According to the comedian, although his friends wondered if he was involved, he was unaware of the alleged sex parties because he was “too ugly” to be invited.
“They were like, 'Well, how were all these people you know feeling panicked and you were the only one not panicking?' And I thought about it for a minute and I said oh my God, I'm ugly. It was a difficult way to find out. Can you imagine if you were me reading the newspaper and found out that everyone in Hollywood was having an orgy behind your back? None of you called me?
Later in the monologue, he pleaded for Trump to “do better” when he returns to office and urged him to stop being petty.
“The presidency is not a place for petty people. Donald Trump, I know you watch the show – man, remember, whether people voted for you or not, they're all counting on you,” he said. “Whether they like you or not, they’re all counting on you. The whole world is counting on you. And I mean it when I say this: good luck. Please do better next time. Please do better next time. Remember your humanity and have empathy for the displaced people, whether they are in the Palisades or Palestine.”
Will this happen? We can only wait and see, but many remain positive and hopeful about the future.
