Despite the title, Star Trek: Chapter 31 is not part of Star Trek

Star Trek: Episode 31 is now available to stream, and that seems to be the consensus this is extremely bad. If you're a Star Trek fan, this might upset you, but I have good news.

Despite the name, Star Trek: Episode 31 not part of Star Trek at all. It's actually part of a completely different screen universe.

First, a little background. Touted to be a spin-off, the film focuses on the character played by Michelle Yeoh Star Trek: Discovery. Star Trek: Episode 31 was greenlit only after Yeoh won the Academy Awards for Best Actress for her performance in the diverse film. Everything Everywhere Everything Simultaneously.

It's safe to say that the film was largely made because The most important thing wanted to associate their brand with the Oscar-winning actress. This is common practice.

What fans didn't realize when they were making it was that they also wanted to turn her Oscar-winning film Everything Everywhere Everything Simultaneously about a movie franchise. And right there Star Trek: Episode 31 comes because it's actually a sequel to Michelle Yeoh's award-winning alternate universe jump movie, not a Star Trek movie.

Star Trek: Chapter 31 is actually part of another franchise

Although the film has the words “Star Trek” in the title, nothing in the film is related to Star Trek. None of the production design looks like Trek, the ships don't look like Trek, and very little of the vernacular, technology, or world-building resembles any kind of Star Trek we've seen before.

Article 31 goes like a poorly written, generic heist movie until the final moments of the film, when its true origins are revealed with the appearance of Jamie Lee Curtis. Curtis starred opposite Yeoh in the film Everything Everywhere Everything Simultaneously. At the end of Section 31, she is revealed as the secret leader of Section 31, Michelle Yoh's boss, and the mastermind behind it all.

Her interaction with Yeoh's character is more reminiscent of a scene from Everything Everywhere Everything Simultaneously than Star Trek, and that's because it is.

Or at least I choose to believe it is.

Everything Everywhere Everything Simultaneously is a movie about infinite alternate universes. Because usually nothing to do with Star Trek and everything to do with this movie, Article 31 cements itself as happening Everything Everywhere Everything Simultaneously multiverse, not in the Star Trek universe.

Michelle Yeoh's character Philippa Giorgi is just another multiverse version of her Everything Everywhere character. Jamie Lee Curtis is one of the few constants the character has with her as she navigates the multiverse of this film. So of course she's here too.
