The 2025 Oscar will celebrate and honor the best films and shows of the year, as well as those that have touched the ongoing Los Angeles fires.

The 97th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 2 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. Although the date of the ceremony has remained the same, the Academy's CEO Bill Kramer and President of the Academy Janet Young teased that the show may look different this year after the Los Angeles wildfires affected thousands of people across the region, including many celebrities.

“We are devastated by the impact of the fires and the profound loss experienced by so many in our community. The Academy has always been a unifying force in the film industry, and we are committed to standing together in the face of adversity,” Kramer and Young said in a joint statement Jan. 13, noting that the Oscar voting period has been extended.

“Furthermore, as we want to be sensitive to the infrastructure and accommodation needs of the region in these coming weeks, we definitely need to make some changes to our event schedule that we believe our industry will support.” the statement continued. “Our members always agree on how important it is for us to come together as a community and we are determined to use this opportunity to celebrate our resilient and compassionate industry. We also hope to honor our frontline workers who have helped with the fires, recognize those affected and encourage people to join the academy to support the relief effort.

Will the 2025 Oscars be affected by the Los Angeles fires?

It is not known if the LA wildfires will affect the awards ceremony itself. However, due to the fires, the voting period for members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was extended several times. Voting closed on January 17, which was the date the nominations were originally scheduled to be announced.

The Oscar Nominees Luncheon was scheduled for Monday, February 10, but was canceled, while the Science and Technology Awards were rescheduled from their original date of Tuesday, February 18.

How are the Oscars different from other award shows?

Although several award shows are voted on by governing bodies, the Oscars are voted on exclusively by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Unlike the Golden Globes, SAG Awards and Critics Choice Awards, which honor both film and TV, the Oscars only honor achievements in the field of cinema.

There will be no musical performances by the nominated artists
