Footage from the live-action Until Dawn movie reveals changes to the video game

Cracking the code to adapt any video game into a TV show or movie might be more successful than it used to be, but that doesn't mean it's easy. oh sure super-fast hedgehogs have become box office titansand successful spore-based stories have once again made us cry for Pedro Pascal. For director David F. Sandberg's adaptation of Until Dawn, the difficulty setting could be a little higher.

Originally released in 2015, Until Dawn was a cinematic horror game where you took control of a group of characters where every corner you turned or conversation the player chose to engage in could affect their life or death. one game was the same. It created one of the best horror video game experiences ever. Now, as seen in the first look at Sandberg's film (embedded above), it looks like this variation on the mechanic is being cleverly introduced in an entirely new story and a completely different setting compared to the game the film is based on.

The original 'Until Dawn' game in particular boasts motion-captured performances by Rami Malek, Hayden Panettiere and Peter Stormare, the latter of whom is the only returning cast member confirmed to have starred in the film version. Until Dawn follows a group of friends stranded in a mountain cabin in the snow when all kinds of chills begin. However, the footage in this ad (which also includes interview segments with Sandberg and co-writer/producer Gary Doberman) includes what looks like a good old-fashioned house that screams “haunted” without the snow. Of course, just because the location is different now doesn't mean it will stay that way.

Could Until Dawn's clever movie mechanic send us back to the game's original setting?

According to Sandberg returning to the horror genre after steering a pair of “Shazam!” movies, “Until Dawn” has a mechanic “that will see characters die and they can try again.” So “Happy Death Day” so far, right? Unlike that excellent horror-comedy franchise (which mixed Scream with Groundhog Day), this new film will feature a video game-like quality, meaning that the characters will not only be brought back to the land of the living, but a completely different experience. . “Every time they come back to life, they're like in a new horror genre. They're going to have to make it to dawn to survive,” Sandberg added.

This detail suggests that the film is trying to match the original game as best as possible, which combined many horror genres and immersed you in them with each character you control. While one roamed the cabin in search of an unidentified stalker, another was lost in the halls of an abandoned mental hospital that was still very busy. With that in mind, don't be surprised if the film's cast (which also includes Maya Mitchell, Odessa Asion, and Michael Cimino) gets cold feet and they all fall into place at some point. which will be very familiar to fans of the original video game.

Until Dawn opens in theaters on April 25, 2025.
