The 2025 Oscars ceremony promises to be a historic evening.
Bowen Yang And Rachel Sennot announced nominations in 23 categories live on January 23, and some names are making waves in Hollywood. Emilie Pérez leads the pack, garnering a total of 13 nominations across the board, with nominations for Cinematography, Editing, Directing and Best Picture.
But she was a breathtaking star Karla Sofia Gascon who made history as the first openly trans actress to be nominated for an Oscar.
The Spanish actress was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of the film's title character. Karla has already made history this awards season, becoming the first trans woman to win Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival.
Previously, the Academy has recognized cisgender actors who portrayed transgender characters with Jared LetoBest Supporting Actor Award for Dallas Buyers Club, Hilary Swankthe best actress award for Boys don't cry And Eddie Redmaynethe best actor award for The Danish girl.
