Insider Reports on Ryan Gosling's Future in Sean Levy's 'Star Wars'

Enjoying his roles in “Barbie” and “The Fall Guy,” Gosling would be the first actor to join Levy in a galaxy far, far away film, which is still untitled.

Sean Levy recently found commercial success with 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine, and it looks like he wants to recreate the magic in a galaxy far, far away. That won't be easy, as there hasn't been a Star Wars movie in theaters since 2019, when The Rise of Skywalker concluded the 9-episode Skywalker Saga that began in 1977 with A New Hope.

Levy's Star Wars film was first announced for 2022, with his The Adam Project collaborator Jonathan Tropper set to write the script. It is not clear where and when the project is installed, but The Hollywood Reporter revealed that it was intended to be a standalone film when they announced Gosling's casting.

Gosling might be a good choice for the role, as he recently finished filming another space movie: Phil Lord and Chris Miller's Hail Mary.

Like many movies and TV shows, Sean Levy was forced to halt work on his Star Wars project due to the WGA writer's strike. In September 2023, Levy revealed that he was forced to quit the Lucasfilm project while promoting his Netflix limited series All The Light We Cannot See.

During the interview at Collider's TIFF Media Studiohe told journalist Steve Weintraub, “We had just started the development process on my film and there was a writer's strike,” adding, “So we're in the kind of holding scheme that so much of our industry is in.”

His Real Steel series was also affected by the hiatus. “However, as I said, I want it as much as Real Steel fans want it, so alive but paused,” he added.

In the December 2022 interview with ColliderLevy revealed that he had spoken with the president of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy “for a while” about making a Star Wars movie, but admitted that “There's a lot of work to be done” before his script hits the big screen.

“Yes. I'm very aware of the ratio of filmmakers who get on the starting line. As you know, Steve, I'm a business student, and of course I noted that,” Levy said at the time. “But my attitude is this: I have this golden ticket to a galaxy far, far away, and I'm going to dedicate myself to developing the script that gives me the privilege of making this movie.”

“I don't get attached to things because it looks good in a trade statement. I stick to the things I intend to make. And you better believe I'm not going to waste this juiciest opportunity,” he continued. “I will work on the job. But first I had to work on making Deadpool. So it's definitely long-term planning, but I want to be one of the films that gets on the starting line because these are rare opportunities and I want to make the most of it.

“I've been talking to Cathy Kennedy for a while and she's been aware of my passion for this franchise for a long time. The stars finally aligned and she came to me and said, let's do something here,” he added. “And that's as much as I can tell. But this is definitely a development and nowhere near preparation. So there's a lot of work to be done.”

In an interesting twist, Ryan Gosling almost starred in “Wolf Man,” the latest monster movie from Universal Pictures and Blumhouse. Between the announcement of the film and its release, many changes were made, including a change of director.

Although Gosling is still credited as a producer, his lead role as Blake was eventually awarded to Christopher Abbott of Kraven the Hunter and Poor Things. In an interview with CinemaBlenddirector Leigh Wannell revealed that the lead change was due to scheduling.

“It's pretty much the same thing. It was really … when I was working with Ryan, it was a similar story that you see now. It was isolation, the same characters. It just took so much time. There were these strikes, and it all happened,” Suddenly Ryan's schedule changed this life is better than I could have hoped for.
