It is reported that Warner Bros. working on new Gremlins and Goonies movies

Dust off the doubloons and turn off all the lights because the message from Deadline reveals that not only “The Goonies” (one of the best children's movies ever made) received the sequel treatment, but family filmmaking legend Chris Columbus is also working on a third Gremlins movie.

Look, we know, okay? We're also afraid that our excitement for one sign increases when it comes to these two nostalgic nuggets, given the history of both franchises trying to squeeze out another story over the past few decades. As it stands, “Gremlins” had moved on a bit, at least in animated form, when the prequel episode “Gremlins: Secrets of Mogwai” aired on Max in 2023. Even the director of two original films, Joe Dante, felt the show might as well have been “Gremlins 3”, which made for an enjoyable watch. However, he believes it's a franchise that will definitely need to be revisited.

“I think it's inevitable,” Dante told /Film in 2022. “The title is too well-known not to do anything with it. So eventually someone will do something with it, and that's fine, as long as there's not too much CGI.” It's a balance that could arguably be achieved by a third film, if it happens. It's the second chapter of The Goonies that might be harder to dig.

There are many reasons why “The Goonies 2” never happened. There are also several reasons why this could be. Until his death, the film's original director, Richard Donner, fought hard to send us back to the Goon Docks, but sadly, it never happened. Some of the film's original cast also seemed to have a mixed perspective on entertaining the idea. Josh Brolin questioned why this would even happen, while Martha Plimpton, who played Steph in the original film, killed the latest batch of rumors that surfaced as recently as last year.

An original cast member of The Goonies always hoped that we would somehow see the treasure hunting team in action. Talking to Huffington Post In 2017, Sean Astin said, “It's always possible. I'll say it's likely to happen. I don't know when, but I've always had confidence that this sequel would happen, mainly because (producer) Steven Spielberg from , told me when I was a kid that he wanted it to happen and never changed his mind.” For now, we can only hope that both our dreams finally come true and, most importantly, that Corey Feldman gets at least one phone call.
