Ivanka Trump causes a sensation without saying a word.
On Monday January 20, Donald Trump made history by taking the oath of office as President of the United States.
Now, a legendary fashion house that once dressed Jacqueline Kennedy has – in the eyes of many – diminished her legacy by doing the same for Ivanka.
Who dressed Ivanka Trump for the inaugural dinner?
Oscar de la Renta died in 2014 from cancer. The eponymous fashion house of the singular designer remains in business.
This same house also dressed Ivanka Trump for her January 19, 2025 inaugural dinner with the controversial former (and now current) president before he returned to power.
Not only did Oscar de la Renta (the fashion brand) dress Ivanka for the occasion, but they also featured her work on Instagram.
The fashion house raved about dressing Ivanka in “a custom, off-the-shoulder empire waist dress, embroidered with crystal and beaded flowers, with a silver stole.”
As you can imagine, countless followers of the page had a very different reaction.
“Oh ok, so we are done with odlr,” one commenter wrote. “The ODLR sold its soul,” characterized another, followed by a simple: “Unsubscribe.”
“Sad to end odlr,” lamented another Instagram user. Another agreed with a quiet: “Not the proudest day in the house.” »
Other commenters noted that fashion brand Oscar de la Renta had “lost his mind.” Others noted that such involvement in the Trump crime family is “shameful.”
Another Instagram user wrote: “Unfollow after maybe 8-10 years. I loved your content but this is unacceptable. Bye.”
And this was not an isolated incident. Earlier the same day, Ivanka Trump wore a beige ensemble for a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Oscar de la Renta presented the photos with apparent pride. Commenters condemned the fashion house for “dressing these people up.”
“Whew. No. We are not going to normalize ANY OF THIS. NOT TRACKED,” announced one reviewer. Many others had similar views.
Is this really so surprising?
Obviously, longtime fans of fashion and the Oscar de la Renta brand in particular have the right to express their feelings of disgust and betrayal.
Although Ivanka Trump has made it a point to avoid serving as a political endorser for much of this campaign, that wasn't the case eight years ago. And in this case, she was attending her father's official events, not a Taylor Swift concert. It's not apolitical.
The overlap between the worlds of fashion and politics has long been a source of controversy.
As many have noted, Hugo Boss made uniforms for the SS. Coco Chanel was herself a Nazi informant.
Today, Oscar de la Renta finds himself at the center of a heated controversy. The brand has yet to publicly respond to today's backlash,
