James Gunn fixes a DC casting bug

Currently, comic book fans are somewhat divided on whether the DC Universe (DCU) will be successful. Some think it will succeed in rivaling the early Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in popularity, while others fear it will repeat most (if not all) of the mistakes that sunk the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). However, some recent casting news gives us high hopes that this upcoming cinematic universe will at least be more accurate to the comics. Now that James Gunn has greenlit Jason Momoa starring as Lobo Supergirl: The Woman of Tomorrowhe has effectively fixed the DCEU's biggest casting mistake.

Momoa was not the real Aquaman

Honestly, Momoa was always the weirdest part of the DCEU. For example, actors like Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, and Gal Gadot always seemed perfectly cast, as their on-screen performances mirrored (more or less) the comic portrayals of their characters. Aquamanwhile he was always a stubborn and regal king of the comics, the DCEU recast him as a mostly dopey party dude who only existed to pound beers and shout bad platitudes. James Gunn obviously wants a more accurate cinematic universe for the comics, and Jason Momoa is the perfect actor to cast Lobo because, frankly, his king of Atlantis was acting like this jerk too much. an alien a warrior.

However, if you look at the box office receipts, moviegoers seemed to love Momoa as Aquaman (at least at first). Lobo and Momoa belong together

So why are we so sure James Gunn made the right decision in casting Jason Momoa as Lobo, especially when it's reminiscent of the DCEU's failures? As mentioned above, he has been involved in the hearing process for many years. The Aquaman we saw fighting alongside the Justice League or fighting to save Atlantis bore almost no resemblance to the comic book character, as he looked like a direct-to-video action star with stiff “cool” dialogue that could have been written by a five-year-old. This kind of dialogue is better suited for Lobo, a character known for his over-the-top lines and bad attitude.

As James Gunn knows, Jason Momoa also has the perfect build for Lobo, a character whose ripped body is constantly on display (that's what happens when you put the vest on but leave the shirt off). However, Aquaman's actor's stilted performance is far more important than his physique, as this is a character whose violent, devil-may-care gaze is the opposite of Superman's moralistic boy scout. We don't know yet how Milly Alcock will play Supergirlbut it looks like she'll make the perfect nemesis (and likely third reluctant ally) if Momoa gives Lobo some of his remaining DCEU vigilantes.

Finally, while it doesn't guarantee a stellar performance, it's great to see Jason Momoa in James Gunn's role as Lobo, as the actor has spent years discussing how he'd like to play the role. All great screen performances start with an actor's passionate dedication to the project, and we know Momoa is very passionate about the latest Czarnians on-screen role. Combined with Gunn's own passion for this peculiar universe he brings to life, the future looks incredibly bright. DC fans.

Before anyone raises their trident to throw at us, we'll end by admitting that Momoa has always been a great superhero, but he's been held back (sorry, fanboy, to break it) by his extremely limited eyesight. for such directors as Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon. After the success of films like Guardians of the Galaxy and shows similar Peacekeeperit's clear that James Gunn is as passionate about comics as Jason Momoa is about Lobo. And considering we've waited decades to see the main man on screen in a live-action movie, we're more about the DCU now than ever.
