Court documents from the Jontay Porter sports betting scandal reveal that the former Raptor allegedly sent text messages to sports bettors during games.
Former NBA player turned pandemic Crypto Bro Jontay Porter is facing the fallout from his alleged sports betting fraud without a fight. Last July, Porter pleaded guilty to fraud conspiracy and was banned for life from the NBA.
As his May 20 sentencing date approaches, more and more details are emerging about the ridiculous, fledgling finesse he attempted to orchestrate.
According to The United States todayAfter apprehending a sixth person involved in the scandal, federal authorities have released more details about the scheme. On January 22, 2024, Porter reportedly sent a text message to bettors detailing his plans to withdraw from the game against the Grizzlies.
Although Porter is not identified in legal documents, it is clear that “NBA Player 1” is likely the only NBA player involved.
“Hit the underside for the big numbers. No blocking, no theft. I'll play an initial 2-3 minute stint off the bench, then when I'm subbed in, tell them my eyes are killing me again. Court documents allege the “NBA Player 1” message is sent to other sports bettors.
Additionally, authorities revealed that a co-conspirator also received inside information about a March 20 match in which Porter confirmed he would withdraw again. What looked like a plan to get your friend's riches ended his career and he now faces 20 years in prison.
As sports betting becomes the norm in professional sports, algorithms detect any irregular bets.
Apparently, DraftKings noticed a huge amount of money placed on Porter, which immediately raised red flags from everyone. Placing a large amount of US currency on Jontay Porter is not something a logical sports betting fan would do. Additionally, a roleplayer leaving the game to have their eyes checked is suspicious.
Rumors suggest that Porter may have accumulated a significant gambling debt and that his actions were an attempt to offset this amount. Porter is the first casualty of the new era of sports betting and will likely not be the last despite the risk involved.
