Here's what Martin Luther King III said during Donald Trump's inauguration
Sunday, January 19, NBC News published an exclusive 31-minute interview with King III. About two minutes into the interview, King III was asked to say what he thought his father thought about the current state of the country.
“So even I, as a son, can only speculate,” explained King III. “None of us would really know (but) what I can say is … we've seen a lot of chaos. Some of it is constructive. Some of it is destructive. I think Dad would always address how do we build constructive engagement, how do we build a beloved community?
King III explained that his father would be “quite disappointed” that the country is where it is. However, he doesn't believe his father would be “surprised.” Furthermore, the civil rights leader's son explained that when tragedy strikes a nation, individuals come together. When it's over, everyone 'goes back to their corners'. However, he would like unity and togetherness not to exceed the tragedy.
Per NBC New Yorkelsewhere during the interview, King III was asked to share what he would focus on during Trump's inauguration speech.
“He has said he wants to create some sense of (unity),” King III said, referring to Trump. “Now that means you have to be in dialogue with everybody. If you really want to bring a nation together to be an expression of who we call ourselves… we don't represent the 'United States of America' right now…”

Bernice King, Martin Luther King's youngest daughter, also spoke at Donald Trump's inauguration
Monday, January 19 NBC News published an exclusive video interview with Bernice King. During the conversation, she talked about Trump's inauguration, which is on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
“It's wonderful that it's happening on the King's Day, the inauguration, because it reminds us of the King,” she said. “It points us back to King. It says, 'As we move forward, we must do so in the spirit of King.'
Additionally, for those feeling “defeated” by Trump's return to office, King also shared some advice.
“We need to develop a strategy. We missed the strategy. We missed the spirit of Dr. King,” she explained. “The spirit of Dr. King is nonviolence. And nonviolence is not just a posture, it's a mindset. We define it as loving thinking, speaking , a mode of action and engagement that leads to personal, cultural and societal change.
