Michelle Buteau wants Dave Chappelle to spin Trans Jokes

Michelle Bhutto's new special hit Netflix this Tuesday, and the comedian had some good advice for her fellow comedian. Dave Chappelle.

Chappelle received backlash from the transgender community for jokes he made in his 2023 Netflix special, “Dave Chappelle: The Dreamer.”

Michel Bouteau doubled down on the criticism in her Netflix special, “Michelle Bouteau: A Bouteau-ful Mind at Radio City Music Hall.”

According to Variety , Bhutto wants the comedian to “make it funny” when it comes to jokes about the trans community.

In her Netflix special, “Michelle Buteau: A Buteau-ful Mind at Radio City Music Hall,” the 47-year-old comedian criticized Chappelle for the way he jokes about transgender people.

The “Survival of the Thicket” actress challenged her fans to let Chappelle know that he could be funny about the trans community without being condescending.

“We can do it. We can make it funny,” Bhutto said. “We just have to work at it, right? So if you ever run into Dave Chappelle, can you tell him this? I don't think he knows that.

Buteau's Netflix special was released on New Year's Eve.

The comedian gave Chappelle props for becoming an iconic comedian, calling him the “GOAT (Greatest Ever),” but she also grilled him about his transgender jokes and claimed that Chappelle, the GOAT, was labeled as “going out on transgender people.”

She also chastised Chappelle about making transgender people feel unsafe.

“I can't believe that someone would make millions of dollars making people feel unsafe. It's really so wild to me,” Bhutto said. Diversity. “Tonight, I'm opening this thing. This is the Radio City Music Hall takeover, and I'm going to tell everybody that I want to make millions and millions of dollars to make people feel safe, seen, safe, heard and entertained.”

“Dave Chappelle: The Dreamer” also appeared on Netflix a year ago on New Year's Eve, and the comedian was widely criticized for his remarks about transgender people during the special.

Chappelle poked fun at being transgender while telling a story about meeting the comedian Jim Carrey On the set of the Andy Kaufman biopic Man in the Moon.

Carrey played the late comedian in the film, and according to Chappelle, Carrey was the method actor he encountered on set, and the actor stayed in character. The 51-year-old “Half Baked” star added that he was grateful to have witnessed Carrey's creative transformation, but it was “upset” at the time.

“In hindsight, how lucky have I been? That I got to see one of the greatest players of his time immersed in one of his most challenging processes ever? Very lucky to have seen it, but the way it happened, it was very disappointing,” Chappelle said.

“I wanted to meet Jim Carrey, and I had to pretend this was Andy Kaufman,” he continued. “He was clearly Jim Carrey all afternoon. I could look at him and see that he was Jim Carrey. Anyway, I'm saying all this to say that trans people make me feel.”

Chappelle was referring to the ongoing controversy between the comedian and the transgender community stemming from the transgender jokes he told during his 2021 comedy special The Closer. The comedian went on to say that he won't be telling any more trans jokes while doubling down on his brand of humor.

“I don't mess with those people anymore,” he joked. “It wasn't worth it. I don't talk about them. Maybe three or four times tonight, but that's it. I'm tired of talking about them.”

“Honestly, I've been trying to mend my relationship with the trans community because I don't want them to think I don't like them,” he continued.

“You know how I fixed it? I wrote a play. I wrote. Because I know gay men love plays,” he joked. “It's a very sad play, but it's touching. It's about a black trans woman whose pronoun is, unfortunately, n—a. At the end of the show, she dies of loneliness because white liberals don't know how to talk to her. It's sad.”

Bhutto is said to be the first woman to star in a comedy special at Radio City Music Hall in New York USA today.

The comedian shared that she wants to make others feel “seen” with her Netflix special, including the LGBTQ community.

“I never asked my team, 'Can I do this?'” Bhutto said. “I thought, 'How can you help me do this?' I don't want to hear “can't”. This is insane. How do you exist as a black, brown, queer, or fat person? You just do. Stop listening to people who want to discourage you.”

Bhutto also said in his special that Chappelle's style of joking was “dangerous.”

“I'm not saying you can't say things, I'm just saying, 'Can you make it funny?' Because it doesn't seem funny,” Bhutto said. “You're hurting people and making it dangerous. And it's not just Chappelle — it's a part of the culture that I don't understand. When people say, “We can't do what we used to do.” Yes! Slavery used to be legal, you guys. Sometimes we have to move on, and I'm sorry if it's different, but embrace your little mind.
