Adam Sandler is one of the biggest paradoxes in Hollywood…he is mostly known as a comedic goof in movies like Billy Madison and Happy Gilmorebut then he turns around and kills it in a deadly serious movie like Uncut gems. Considering he followed it up with a barely watchable comedy Hubby Halloweenit's official: we never know what we're going to get from this great actor hidden in a clown's body. Because of this uncertainty, I was pleasantly surprised that a serious Sandler came out Spacemanquirky sci-fi space adventure that you can now stream on Netflix.

Spaceman (based on the novel by Jaroslav Kalfar Bohemian Cosmonaut) focuses on an astronaut who goes on a long-duration space mission with a lot of luggage. He has been at loggerheads with his wife, who is understandably furious at him for leaving her and their unborn daughter for the stars. In the middle of this ironically down-to-earth drama is a new development: an astronaut finds a spider-like creature an alien with telepathic powers who want to know more about humanity. Their interactions help both learn a little more about themselves and the universe, but neither is fully prepared for where this journey (both literally and metaphorically) will take them.
Adam Sandler headlines Spaceman as the astronaut in question, and he does an admirable job of channeling the complex emotions of a man who is constantly driven forward, even as he is constantly haunted by what he left behind. Among the stars is Carey Mulligan (who absolutely killed it A promising young woman and Maestro) as a cosmonaut's wife. Meanwhile, an alien stowaway who telepathically connects with our protagonist is voiced Paul Danowho is rightly loved by fans of the genre for his performance as the Riddler Batman.
Audiences react to Spaceman
Initially Spaceman was set to premiere in 2023, but a warning from SAG-AFTRA delayed its release until 2024. When it debuted, almost no one really knew what to make of it: Rotten tomatoesthe film has a critical score of 50 percent, with critics mostly complaining that the film presents several interesting ideas without fully engaging with them. Meanwhile, it has a 66 percent Popcornmeter rating, and audiences generally agree that the film does a surprisingly good job of adapting a crisp and complex novel to the silver screen.
Like the cosmonaut in the center Spacemanyou're probably struggling with some uncomfortable questions right now, starting with why I'm recommending you watch a movie that few people have seen and critics haven't been impressed with. The first reason is Adam Sandler's performance: although the move isn't nearly as good Uncut gemsthis is another strong example (somewhat similar Punch Drunk Love before that), how good can this funny man be when he decides to be a serious actor. In addition, his extensive experience in both comedic and dramatic roles helps him sell a sad and serious film in which his lead actor is a talking alien spider.
In addition to the great performances, Spaceman it's also worth watching for its (ironically) very down-to-earth themes. Franchises like Star Trek have encouraged us to fight those who want to leave Earth and explore the stars, but Captain Kirk and Captain Picard rarely touches on how all this star trekking affects their family members back home. Sandler's character is very compelling as he shares a dream of space exploration, but must deal with how the pursuit of that dream has affected the one he loves most.
After all Spaceman is one of the more cerebral movies out there, but it's definitely worth going on this strange journey through space. Will you love this movie as much as I did, or will you want to take Sandler's out-of-this-world movie into the sun? You won't know until you watch, and if you're lucky, your opinion won't be swayed by any telepathic alien hiding under the sofa.
