Westerns were once the dominant genre in Hollywood, peaking in the 1950s and 1960s, but then slowly falling out of favor, despite some great successes in recent decades, but there have been some great ones, and mostly one man's work. tirelessly to bring this genre back to the fore. Kevin Costner, star and director Dances with Wolvesstar Hatfields & McCoysand the modern Star of the West yellowstone, finally brought his passion project, Horizon: An American Sagaan epic four-part film series that aimed to redefine westerns for cinema. The problem is that the first movie bombed so badly that the sequel has been delayed indefinitely, but there's still hope because Horizon is now a huge hit on Netflix.
A great start
Horizon: The American Saga – Chapter 1 debuted on Netflix in early January and has been a top 10 streamer ever since. The first part of the epic saga has a huge cast of characters, some of whom we don't even see until the end of the film's teaser. Chapter 2, in several plots that have not yet intersected. Chapter 1 isn't a complete film, with none of the stories reaching anything like a conclusion, but what it is is a brave experiment in bringing the structure of television to film.
The film begins with an Apache raid on the new settlement of Horizon, which serves as the catalyst for the first two storylines, which follow some survivors seeking refuge in a military camp and others seeking revenge. Meanwhile, in a less developed plot, a wagon train is on its way to Horizon when it comes to the attention of the Apache, with the threat of an impending attack hanging over the occupants. Another plot follows a young woman on the run from her abusers, while Costner, as the mysterious Hayes Ellison, finds himself wrapped up in her falling in love with the woman of the night, Marigold.
Each storyline shows potential, and some of the characters, including Jen Malone's Ellen and one of her pursuers, Caleb Sykes, played by Jamie Campbell Bower (you know him as Stranger things Vecna), stands out in the middle of the ensemble. There are some standout moments, including a tense, well-shot shootout that proves Costner knows what he's doing behind the camera, but for the most part Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 there's so much going on, it's easy to miss the details, and that's probably why it starts to work Netflix.
We may never see the whole saga
in theaters, Horizon: American Saga – Chapter 1 bomin bed, earning $38 million along with an onslaught of average reviews, and most critics and fans agree that the film was good, but it had a lot of gratuitous set-ups. Initially Chapter 2 was slated to open in theaters two months after the first film debuted in June, but the second film was pulled from release in early July, and no replacement has yet been announced. Given the success of the first movie on Netflix, the series, which still has three more movies to go, could have a future. streaming network, not theaters.
Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 debuted in Max last fall, but the Warner Bros. streaming service lacks Netflix's footprint, and more people may have been watchingd movies in the last week than in the last few months combined. It would make sense for the streaming service to take on the franchise, especially since Kevin Costner self-funded the production to make it his passion project after decades of working on it. Netflix needs content, and after spending hundreds of millions on Zach Snyder's Rebel MoonCostner's Western epic could likely be had for what a streamer would consider a rounding error.
For now, if you haven't seen it Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1is still worth checking out on Netflix, if for no other reason than to see Kevin Costner on screen for three hours. At least now you can pause and take a bathroom break when you're streaming. And if enough people stream it, we might get to see the rest of the epic someday.
