Nicki Minaj was named in a lawsuit filed by a former employee who accused the rapper of assault and battery.
Brandon Garrettwho claimed to have worked as Minaj's manager during her 2024 tour, is suing Minaj, 42, according to Friday, Jan. 3, court documents obtained by TMZ. In the filing, Garrett claimed that Minaj called him to her dressing room after an April 2024 concert in Detroit, where she allegedly became upset after learning that he had asked someone else to pick up the prescription.
“(Another employee, Luke Montgomery) explained that his responsibilities included tasks such as setting up the venue's dressing room, setting up the private jet, setting up hotel rooms, quick change room refreshments, and setting up the tour bus,” the documents state. “Mr. Montgomery stated that these duties were performed in addition to all (Garrett) for (Minaj's) reported requests, including food orders, drinks, personal items, baby items, and especially prescriptions.
Garrett reportedly explained to Minaj that he was busy with another task during the show and needed another assistant to complete the task. After hearing his reasoning, Minaj was said to be “visibly upset” and “screamed angrily” at him. She apparently said, “Are you mad if he takes my prescription?” and “If my husband (Kenneth Petty) were here, he'd knock your teeth out.”
Garrett also claimed that Minaj then “openly slapped” him on the right side of his face and then his right wrist. Several hours later, Garrett claimed another member of Minaj's team told him he would no longer be joining her team for the Chicago stop of her tour.
Minaj has denied Garrett's claims through her lawyer. Us Weekly has reached out for comment.
“Ms. Petty has not been charged at this time, so we do not know the specific charges,” the attorney said. Judd Burstein told Diversity in the announcement. “However, if the lawsuit is what TMZ is reporting, it is completely false and frivolous. We are confident that this case brought by a former assistant will be quickly resolved in Ms. Petty's favor.
Minaj is a rapper who broke into the music industry with the release of her 2010 album Pink Friday. She has had several ups and downs throughout her career including Arrest in Amsterdam in 2024.
During the international leg of her tour, Minaj claimed she was stopped by police after bags of marijuana were apparently found in her luggage.
“They've been trying to keep me from coming to every show,” Minaj wrote on Instagram in May 2024. “They took my bags before I saw them. Put it on the plane. Now they are waiting at customs. This is what it looks like when private individuals are paid a lot of money to try to sabotage a tour after everything has failed. Everything they have done is illegal. “
Minaj claimed the drugs belonged to her security and was released a few hours later.
“We have just released a 41-year-old American woman who we arrested this afternoon in Schiphol on suspicion of exporting soft drugs,” X said in a statement to the Royal Dutch Marehaus, possibly referring to Minaj. “After consultation with the prosecutor's office, the suspect was fined and can continue on his way.”
