Keke Palmer and SZA kick off 2025 with hilarious hijinks One of these days, and the gag is… BOSSIP got exclusive details about the film from its stars!
Atlanta bristled with black excellence in a recent star-studded premiere for the heartbreaking, suspenseful and sensational buddy comedy.
As before reportedthe dynamic duo dazzles as Dreux and Alyssa, two close-knit roommates who tackle a tragic time bomb: trying to earn their $15,000 rent after Alyssa's boos cause them to blow up their money and a chance to keep a roof over their heads. From start to finish, the ridiculousness unfolds in the Issa Rae-produced film as Dreux and Alyssa resort to extreme measures to make a quick buck.
Keke was present at the premiere and spoke to BOSSIP about his collaboration with SZA.
“I keep telling people this because it’s crazy, but it’s almost like love at first sight with SZA. We just had chemistry, and it's like I don't know where it came from. I worked with her once on SNL, It happened very quickly, but by the time we started preparing for this film, it was like we'd been friends for years.
Palmer went on to explain that the best part of working on the film was having someone she could instantly vibe with.
“We had to shoot the film in 20 days, and in that short time I could just vibe with her and get lost in these characters.”
Likewise, the legendary Vanessa Bell Calloway sang the singer's praises.
“I think she did a great job,” she told BOSSIP. “When I met her, I told her: 'Girl, you know, you're on my playlist!'
She also talked about the chemistry between SZA and Keke, which she said would be perfect for a sequel.
“I think they have great chemistry. It's a female buddy movie, and kids their age really resonate with it.”
Talking about resonance, the actress added that people will relate to the community aspect of the film translated by Dreux and Alyssa residing in Baldwin Village, Los Angeles, aka “The Jungle”.
What I love about this movie is the community,” Calloway said. “It actually took place in Los Angeles, in The Jungle and that’s what it’s about. These girls and their community. So I loved (playing) Mama Ruth because she is their community and she helps them.
Director Lawrence Lamont talks Keke and SZA's chemistry One of these days
As for director Lawrence Lamont, he told BOSSIP that Keke and SZA fully embraced their roles in One of these days because they “literally became the characters.”
“It was amazing to see them because they weren't Keke or SZA, they literally became the characters and their friendship that we see on screen – like when the cameras cut, they were always having fun, laughing and having fun They both have many of the personal characteristics of these characters.
He also spoke about the impact of his collaboration with Issa Rae, highlighting her empowering presence.
“Issa Rae is just a super empowered (person).” Lamont reflected on their shared experience working on Damn rap! and how it helped them creatively sync up on One of these days, adding, “We’re already kind of in each other’s brains.”
As the Black director of a Black woman-led comedy, Lamont also expressed the value of Issa's support.
“It's hard not to believe in yourself when someone like her believes in you.”
