Robert Pattinson is a message for Twilight haters.
“I love when people say to me, 'Man, Twilight ruined the vampire genre,” the 38-year-old actor said in an interview with GQ Spain published on Tuesday, January 21st. “Are you still stuck on that s––t? How can you be sad about something that happened almost 20 years ago? It's too crazy.
Pattinson rose to fame with the role of vampire Edward Cullen The Twilight Saga moviesthe first of which was released in cinemas in 2008. He filmed alongside Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner in all five films of the saga, which grossed more than $3 billion worldwide, although reactions from critics and fans remain mixed.
Although Twilight had given Pattinson his big break, the franchise could have looked very different, according to the filmmaker Catherine Hardwickewho was the director of the first film.
during November 2023 appearance on “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Hardwicke revealed that film studio Summit Entertainment initially didn't think Pattinson was the right choice for Edward.
“They called me back and said, 'Do you think you can make this guy look good?'” she said of the studio's reaction to Pattinson's audition video. “I said, 'Yeah, I do.' Did you see his cheekbones? We redo the hair and everything, and he'll start working out, and he'll be gorgeous.''
Hardwicke then had to convince the executives that Pattinson was right for the role after failing to impress in person.
“They didn't believe it at first. He walked in there with a stained shirt,” she said. “It was Rob.”
Pattinson also struggled with the studio's direction of the original film, which he wanted to transform into a more edgy aesthetic. “I wanted to make it as artistic as possible,” Pattinson said GQ (per Diversity) in February 2022. “We had a weird tension where the studio was afraid to make things a little emo and stuff. I think that's the only way to play it. I spent so much time (on set) freaking out… I couldn't believe how I was acting half the time.
