Fans of an iconic soul duo are mourning the loss of an R&B legend.
Sam Moorewho made up half of the American soul group Sam and Dave alongside David Prater– known for hits like “Hold On, I'm Comin”, “Soul Man” and “Soothe Me” – his wife and manager has died Joyce Moore confirmed at multiple points of sale. He was 89 years old.
The late singer died the morning of Jan. 10 at his home in Coral Gables, Fla., his wife said, following an unspecified surgery he underwent earlier this week. Jeremy Westbya representative for Sam, said rolling stone that he died from “healing-related complications” from his procedure, but the exact cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
Alongside Dave, Sam was an integral part of the R&B community in the 1960s. The duo's song “Soul Man” went to number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart when it was released in 1967, later winning a Grammy for Best Performance by an R&B group at the 10th annual ceremony. The duo was nominated for three additional Grammy Awards during their active years and received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019.
