Selena's killer is seeking parole 30 years after the singer's death

Yolanda Saldiva is serving a life sentence for the 1995 murder of an American Tejano singer. Saldiva was Selena's former employee and obsessed fan. Saldiva shot the “Dreaming of You” singer in a hotel room in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Saldiva currently works for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in the Patrick L. O'Daniel Division in Gainesville. An ex-prisoner claims Saldiva has a “bounty” for killing Selena.

According to The New York Post, Saldivar has filed the paperwork to be eligible for parole in 2025. There is reportedly nothing in Saldivar's record that would prevent the parole board from holding the March hearing.

Saldivar, 64, claims she shot Grammy Award winner by chance. The “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” singer had accused Saldivar, who was the then 23-year-old's fan club president, of embezzling more than $60,000 from her. Selena was shot and killed in a Days Inn hotel room in Corpus Christi, Texas after a confrontation with Saldivar.

After being shot, Selena ran to the lobby and collapsed. Her last words were reportedly “Yolanda … 158,” per PEOPLE. A film about a tragedy in the lead role Jennifer Lopez was released in 1997.

Selena's family will reportedly receive a parole notice in January.

Saldivar is reportedly the target of prison for the murder of the beloved singer.

Former Patrick L. O'Daniel Unit inmate Marisol Lopez claims that “everyone” knows who Saldivar is and they all want “a piece.” Lopez also claims that prison guards are separating Saldivar from the rest of the prison population for her safety.

“Everybody knows who Yolanda Saldivar is,” Lopez said. “She has a prize on her head. Like, everyone wants a piece of her. The guards keep her away from everyone else because she is so hated. If she was out, someone would try to take her down.

Another former inmate, Yesenia Dominguez, claimed that Saldivar was a frequent topic of discussion among inmates in the prison yard.

“Everybody was always like, 'Give me five minutes with that b—tch,'” Dominguez said. “Everybody wanted justice for Selena. She has a target on her back.”

Selena started performing with her siblings in their band Selena y Los Dinos as a child. In 1993 she won a Grammy Award for Best Mexican-American Album for “Selena Live!” at the 36th Annual Grammy Awards in New York.

The singer's Instagram fan account marked the occasion with a commemorative post last March.

The post was captioned: “30 years ago this year, Selena went to New York to attend the 36th Annual Grammy Awards and win Mexican/American Album of the Year for Selena: Live! Relive this unforgettable” concert on all her official digital platforms #SelenaLive1993 #GrammyWinner #SelenaYLosDinos.

Selena received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on November 3, 2017 in Hollywood, California.

The event was attended by members of her band including her sister Suzette Quintanilla, her brother AB Quintanilla III and Selena's widower and former bandmate Chris Perez.

The family celebrates Selena with annual musical tributes honoring the singer. Her father Abraham Quintanilla says his daughter continues to attract new fans years after her untimely passing.

“Over the years, younger generations have discovered and loved him,” he said. “Selena's life was cut short, but her fans have carried her through the years and her legacy has been passed down from generation to generation. That in itself is incredible.”

Quintanilla said in an interview with Univision's Primer Impacto in 2018 that he receives letters from inmates who want to kill Saldivar for murdering the “Queen of Tejano Music.”

“To this day, we still get letters from women who are in the same prison saying they are waiting for him,” he said. “They say they're going to kill him. There are bad women out there. Women who have killed other people in the past. That's why they're there. They have nothing to lose.”
