Skeleton Crew Episode 8 uses A Wizard Of Oz Twist for the second time

This article contains spoilers “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” for episode 8 “The Real Good Guys”.

Skeleton Crew is one of the most refreshing Star Wars titles in a long time. It's a show that appeals to audiences of all ages thanks to its young cast, wide-eyed franchise and using gruesome imagery to sell the danger of the characters. It's also a series with a wide variety of strange alien creatures, which also helps The Skeleton Crew feel like a truly unique and inhabited part of a galaxy far, far away.

Most importantly, the Skeleton Crew understands space pirates aren't just a cool addition to any Star Wars showbut they also deserve a whole series just about them. It's the “Skeleton Crews” corner of the galaxy, and the show excels at taking pirate tropes and archetypes and translating them into “Star Wars,” whether it's most of the plot of “Treasure Island,” character names derived from “Peter Pens” or simply (and finally) introducing the ownership of space straits.

Indeed, “Skeleton Crew” pays homage to other titles, and in the season 1 finale, “Real Good Guys,” we get another homage to classic literature and cinema. This is when Jude Law's force-sensitive criminal Jodh Na Nawood captures Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) and her mother Farah (Kerry Condon) and forces them to accompany him to meet the enigmatic Warden also known as (supposedly) an individual. in charge of the entire At Attin operation – to allow his pirate ship to land safely on the planet. We had heard a lot about the Supervisor during Season 1, but when it came time to meet him, The Skeleton Crew took a page right out of The Wizard of Oz.

We go to meet the supervisor, the wonderful supervisor of Athens

Who or what the warden is, the “Skeleton Crew” didn't really seem like much of a mystery — at least not at first. It wasn't until we learned of Captain Rennod and his legendary exploits to find the Eternal Treasure Planet that fans got the idea that maybe, just maybe, the pirate had succeeded in usurping the Athenian hierarchy and making himself warden.

Of course, that's not what we see. Instead, the moment we arrive at the warden's office, we encounter a giant droid with a rotating head that resembles a Dalek. Not the droid with Rennod's voice, nor the droid head that reveals the little Rennod inside. Nope, just a regular old droid that runs the entire planet. It's basically the Skeleton Crew pulling on their Wizard of Oz, revealing that the head of the organization is just a tiny, sad machine that can be killed by simply shoving a lightsaber through its eye.

Still, it's a smart turn of events and a testament to the overall quality of the Season 1 finale, which focuses less on answering the show's earlier mysteries and more on being a fun adventure. After all, if the Warden had turned out to be Rennod, it wouldn't have been a meaningful twist for Fern or her mom, since the adults at At Attin have already met the Warden and know he's a droid. reasonable, non-piracy. It's possible that a potential second season could expand on the history of the Warden and the other droids on Attin… though alas if early ratings for Skeleton Crew are anything to go bywe probably shouldn't get our hopes up.

The entire Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Season 1 is now streaming on Disney+.
