Stargate SG-1 has maintained a large following since the series launched, and it's always nice to see the cast reunite for different shows and movies. Such was the case with Amanda Tapping's SyFy series, Sanctuaryabout the “Uncanny” creatures that have been part of human lore, legend and mythology but must be protected from the world when Michael Shanks, her longtime SG-1 co-star, appeared in Season 2. The two shared the screen again, making sure to throw in some hints about their time together, and on the DVD commentary, Tapping delightfully doesn't stop praising her old friend.

“Penance” Season 2 Episode 9 is another “Case of the Week” episode. Sanctuaryin which Schenck plays Jimmy, a freak who was forced into smuggling by dangerous criminals. Jimmy and Helen Magnus, Tapping's scientist who is older than she looks, are old friends, but they waved at Tapping's appearance Stargate SG-1Jimmy greets her with “I love the hair” because Amanda Carter was blonde with short hair and Helen has long brunette hair. Both admitted it was a joke and managed to make it into the episode, specifically as a nod to SG-1 fans.

As a freak, Jimmy also has a weird stomach pouch mutation that makes him a talented smuggler, but it also makes him look like a stomach pouch. Stargate SG-1 Jaffa. Although the Jaffa housed a Gou'ald larva in his pouch, Jimmy tends to carry bombs in his hands. Sanctuary only ends as well as it could, as one of the decrees of the writer's room must have been “Helena can never win” after Jimmy sacrificed himself.

Sanctuary Perfect Star Gate Joke

Gary Jones inside Sanctuary

Shanks and Carter's reunion isn't the only crossover Stargate SG-1 and Sanctuarywhich also featured Christopher Heyerdahl as part of the main cast as both Join Druitt and “Big Guy” (never confirmed to be Big Foot, but he is Big Foot). Heyerdahl played Pallan, a man imprisoned in a dome before, of course, Samantha Carter breaks his connection to the artificial intelligence that manipulates him. Clearly, someone thought the two had great chemistry, because the second time they worked together, playing Supernatural Exes provides some of the best parts of the first three seasons.

A more subtle but perfectly targeted joke Sanctuary season three directly focused on the biggest difference between Amanda Tapping's two characters: the accent. In the Season 3 episode “The Bank Job”, Helen Magnus has to stage a bank robbery, and while doing so, he switches to an American accent, which prompts the teller to comment, “I knew the British accent was fake!” The narrator is played by Gary Jones, better known as Stargate SG-1 Norman Harriman, a slick reference to how British Tapping used an American accent to play Carter.

Like almost every other couple science fiction performances, Stargate SG-1 and Sanctuary there were a lot of recognizable faces between the two shows, partly as references, but also because both shows were filmed in Vancouver. That's why a lot of Supernatural performers show up, and Heyerdahl seems to have been in almost every series shot in Canada. None of them are as good as Dr. Jackson and Dr. Carter back on screen together even for a few minutes; and if you can, track down the Sanctuary DVD commentary, which is not only fascinating because of the unique way the show was made, but also because Amanda Tapping enthusiasm for science fiction is contagious.
