Horror is not a genre you usually associate with music, although there are some killer musicals, including old classics such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show and newer features like Anna and the Apocalypse. The only problem with horror musicals, however, is that they focus more on Broadway-style gore than gore. If you are like me and have been searching perfect A combination of melodies and horror, you're in luck: Rap! The genetic opera now streaming for free on Tubi.
Rapo plot! The genetic opera
Based on the musical of the same name, Rap! The genetic opera takes place in a bleak future where most of humanity has been wiped out due to widespread organ failure. The ruthless company GeneCo will transplant organs to those with money, which has been able to save lives while creating a culture of hedonistic body modification. But if someone misses a payment, those organs can be reclaimed, and when GeneCo's founder is diagnosed with a fatal diagnosis, it puts him on a collision course with his Repo Man that will change everything.
The cast Rap! The genetic opera is small but full of familiar faces, including a surprise appearance by Paris Hilton and even a cameo by Joan Jett. Our main female character in the game Spy children veteran Alexa Vegas and horror icon Bill Moseley memorably play one of the underdogs of the found GeneCo. Meanwhile, the titular Repo is playing Buffy the Vampire Slayer legend Anthony Stewart Head, and the dying CEO is played by Paul Sorvino, who hasn't been this stealthily perfect since Baz Luhrmann Romeo+Juliet.
Cult failure
Despite this composite composition, Rap! The genetic opera was a box office bomb, mainly due to its very limited theatrical release. With a budget of $8.5 million, the film only made $188,126 (no, that's not a typo). In general, critics praised the film unsparingly for its style, but derided it as crass and narratively inconsequential. The genetic operaa movie that couldn't even make $200,000 at the box office and is being bashed by critics at all? First, the music is surprisingly catchy. It might not sound like much, but with how much the lyrics to the rent-free song 'Things You See In A Graveyard' live in my head, I can't help but recommend this movie to other horror fiends looking for a fresh ear. candies.
In addition, while Rap! The genetic opera has some terrible performances (Paris Hilton deservedly earned a Golden Raspberry Award for worst supporting actress), it also has some memorably wonderful ones. Paul Sorvino manages to deliver great lines and belt out some killer tunes while chewing every piece of scenery he can find, and I truly have never found this talented actor more captivating. As for Anthony Stewart Head, it is unbelievable rewarding as a Buffy fan to see him ditch his goofy librarian persona to play against type as an assassin with a heart of gold.
Finally, as a horror fan, I have to recommend Rap! The genetic opera to try something else. This is a genre filled with tired tropes and shop ideas… like how many times am I supposed to care about teenagers being hunted in the woods or killer sharks terrorizing a small town? Rap! there are big swings going on that don't always connect, but it has the distinction of being completely unique… the kind of massive horror freakshow splatterfest that we may never see another director attempt to create.
REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA REVIEW RESULT
Will you find Rap! The genetic opera as engaging as I am, or do you want the Repo Man to come look at you after watching? You won't know until you stream it for free on Tubi. However, after you realize that you will never see something so strange again, you may be left with a void inside that not even GeneCo could properly fill.
