For science fiction fans, there is perhaps no more common trope than time travel. From Star Trek to Back to the futurewe're used to our favorite heroes and villains racing through time to save or threaten everything that ever was or will be. This has of course led to debate among fans as to which film used the trope best, but those arguments are unnecessary because the answer has been staring us in the face for over 30 years. Simply put, Timecop is the coolest time travel movie ever made, and you can now stream it for free on Tubi.
Timecop rules
Timecop (which is adapted from a story of the same name by Mike Richardson and Mark Verheyden published by Dark Horse Comics) focuses on a government agency tasked with preventing crimes involving time travel. One-time policeman, agent Max Walker is drawn into a tangled secular story in which a senator abuses time travel to finance his presidential ambitions. After the Senator pulls off Biff Tannen and successfully changes the future in his favor, it will take all of Walker's skills and knowledge to save more than the world…he must save history itself.
Great performances are the cornerstone Timecop…Ron Silver (best known for his Emmy-nominated role in West Wing) plays a lazy senator to manipulate the timeline. Meanwhile, Mia Sarah (best known as the lead actress' love interest Ferris Bueller's Holiday) plays Max Walker's wife. Finally, Walker is played by a martial arts movie maestro Jean Claude Van Dammewhose unique brand of action-schlock chutzpah translates Timecop of something almost transcendentally strange.
Fortunately, the general audience did not find it Timecop too weird when it premiered. The film went on to earn $101.6 million against a budget of $27 million. Although the film was not entirely successful, it earned enough to spawn a short-lived ABC television adaptation in 1997. We eventually got a live-action sequel to the film in 2003, though neither the sequel nor the TV series brought Van Damme back. .
Original Timecop may have impressed the box office, but it didn't impress the critics. On Rotten tomatoesthis film has a 42 percent critical rating. Generally speaking, critics agreed that the film would be liked science fiction fans who were able to suspend their disbelief and not ask too many questions about time travel. However, critics mostly agreed that the film fell well short of time travel classics like James Cameron's. Terminator.
Watch Timecop
So, moment of truth: why the hell am I recommending you watch it Timecopa critically maligned sci-fi film whose footprint in pop culture can be measured in atrocious sequels? First, despite the nagging of critics who historically disdain science fiction, this film's time travel plot is both clever and engaging. Its vision of how humans will inevitably abuse the mechanics of time to gain wealth and power is both insightful and creative, and the film as a whole. truly lives up to all its crazy premise.
Mostly, though, Jean-Claude Van Damme, who has previously starred in action classics such as Blood sports, Kickboxerand Universal soldier. He's not the most emotional or expressive actor, but he makes up for it with a raw physicality that turns what could be de rigueur movie fights into wonderful displays of real fighting prowess. Van Damme has always been a special effect in his own right thanks to his martial arts skills, and in the high-tech world of Timecop, his brand of killer kung-fu stands out much more thanks to its delightfully precise but low-tech execution.
Will you like it Timecop as much as I do, or will you want to travel back in time and warn your slightly younger self never to watch it? You won't know until you experience the cross between action shock and ambitious science fiction for yourself.
