While critics may hate their boyish vibe, NSYNC is arguably the best boy band in the world, especially when you consider the cultural and musical impact of breakout star Justin Timberlake. Surprisingly, when NSYNC was in its prime, this best boy band appeared in possibly the worst Star Wars movie. in the 2023 series The hot onesthe band confirmed that they were initially going to perform Attack of the Clones but their cameo was eventually cut from the film.
Bye Bye NSYNC in Star Wars
Part of The hot onesThe charm is the great questions that host Sean Evans asked, and in this episode he ended up asking NSYNC about whether or not they've been filming the second Star Wars prequel. He asked if they were actually going to play Jedi Knights in the movie, and Lance Bass pointed out that it wasn't the whole group that almost did a cameo, just Chris Kirkpatrick, J.J. Chashez and Joey Faton. However, Kirkpatrick immediately pointed out the obvious in their episode: “it never made it to the screen.”
NSYNC members Lance Bass and Justin Timberlake recalled his annoyance at not being initially invited to the second Star Wars prequel. “Lance and I were so hurt,” Timberlake said. This prompted Bas to give a very blunt response: “They were cut anyway, so it doesn't even matter.”
NSYNC is so close to Star Wars
The fact that NSYNC almost appeared in a Star Wars movie made waves through the fandom for the community years ago (more on that soon), but even most superfans don't realize how close the boy band came to being Attack of the Clones. They actually received combat training that ensured they looked at least halfway convincing when they were engaged in the film's climactic Geonosis battle. Joey Fatton sheepishly admitted that the training also sounded convincing because, “when we were doing the scenes,” the musicians were “literally … going 'voom voom' like idiots.”
Interestingly, the only reason NSYNC was invited to participate Attack of the Clones first, that the daughter of Star Wars producer Rick McCallum was a huge fan of the band. The cameo was cut for two reasons, the first being SAG-AFTRA's extras rules. Joey Fatton later admitted that “usually they have to pay SAG the rights to it” and “we only signed a confidential thing that we didn't say anything about, but they had to cut us out of it.”
Although Faton's story is a bit obscure, it helps explain why NSYNC didn't appear in the second Star Wars prequel. Namely, George Lucas and crew didn't want any SAG-related drama. However, there was another reason why they were cut, which was revealed by Fatone's brother Steve in 2015. Basically a band performance Attack of the Clones was rumored well before the film's release, and caused such a backlash among fans that their appearance (complete with Jedi robes and Padawan braids) was scrapped altogether.
In retrospect, NSYNC's slaying of the Star Wars episode was the best. At that time, the fandom was already frozen from the poor quality The Phantom Menace. After that first prequel, there was a lot of speculation about whether George Lucas had lost the creative vision that led him to create this famous galaxy far, far away in the first place. Luckily, Lucas helped say “Bye, Bye, Bye” to that speculation by cutting the band out of the movie entirely.
