The Rush Hour trilogy has not only stood the test of time, it's managed to age like fine wine, with all three films simultaneously appearing in Netflix's top 10. That's an impressive feat for a film series that began in 1998 and ended in 2007, despite being a short-lived series no Chris Tucker or Jackie Chan. Then again, it's the incredible chemistry between the two men that made the formulaic buddy comedy a worldwide blockbuster.
Rush hour
Rush hour has ranked highest Netflixmaking the top three at times, and nearly 30 years later, it's still the pinnacle buddy comedy. Chan's post-book Chief Inspector Lee and Tucker's street-smart LAPD detective Carter are first teamed up to keep Lee busy and distracted from investigating his friend's missing daughter. Of course, they share a common trauma and sing outlandishly to save the day.
Rush hour 2
Given that the film grossed over $275 million, a sequel was inevitable, but Rush hour 2 defied expectations by becoming more than just Netflix streaming hit more than two decades later, but remains one of the best sequels of all time. Moving the action from Los Angeles to Hong Kong, Carter is now a fish out of water on Lee's home turf, and the result is a sequel that hits all the right punches. This time they're stopping a counterfeiting ring, and behind it all is the rich white man Carter knew, with even more of the same charm as in the first movie.
Rush hour 3
Rush hour 3which is Netflix's lowest-rated, is the weakest of the franchise, but it still makes for an excellent buddy comedy. Lee and Carter have adopted a strange friendship with each other as they take on the Chinese mafia, and not even Lee's old childhood friend can come between them. It says a lot about the strength of the franchise when the worst movie still makes $275 million worldwide.
The last of the friend comedies
Fourth Rush hour has been in the works for years, Chris Tucker talked about it in 2019 and Jackie Chan confirmed it was still in production in 2022, but at this point they might as well start Beverly Hills Cop and make it a Netflix original. Movies have changed since the pair first hit the screen together, and now the buddy cop action comedies that were once a Hollywood staple have fallen out of favor. Unmarked tried to bring them along Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, but we're a long way from the days when Jimmy Fallon and Queen Latifah could start a big-budget buddy comedy together.
Thanks to changes in movie-watching tastes, the Rush Hour trilogy on Netflix is a fun throwback to the kind of movies Hollywood stopped making. Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan, as made clear in the DVD special features and their countless interviews together, also started out as work colleagues who didn't really like each other, but became friends who traveled the world together. If Rush hour 4 it will happen, it can't come soon enough.
