For nearly 30 years, one cartoon has dominated pop culture in a way that few properties could hope for, and no, it hasn't The Simpsons. Sponge Square pants debuted in 1999, and approaching its 30th anniversary, the upbeat sponge that lives in a pineapple under the sea shows no signs of slowing down. As evidence, The The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water has spent more than a week in Netflix's top 10 and is also not on the children's list, it is up there with Watchers and Horizon: An American Saga overall top 10.
A film that defies explanation
Ongoing success Sponge Square pants may come as a surprise, but the children who grew up from the adventures of the Bikini Bottom crew are now old enough to have children of their own, who they in turn introduce to the groundbreaking series. And yes, as someone brought up further Doug, Ren and Stimpyand Rugratsthat was a painful sentence to write. Even those not raised on the series have come across it, for example The Simpsons. It's become a central part of modern internet culture, and it seems like there's a Spongebob meme for every occasion.
Most of the popular memes come from the early seasons of the show, in turn Movie Sponge: Sponge Out of Water was released in 2015 and sends Spongebob and friends on a journey through time, space and the strangest of places – dry land – to retrieve the Krabby Patty recipe and save Bikini Bottom. It's delightfully whimsical, featuring a flawless performance from Antonio Banderas as the pirate Burger Beard, and any attempt to summarize parts like “Bikini Bottom turns into Mad Max” and “Sandy tries to sacrifice Spongebob to appease the sandwich gods” makes you sound insane, so it was a return to the top. Sponge Square pants.
Paramount's most successful franchise
Any long streak will have its ups and downs, but just like that The Simpsons Movie helped distract fans from the lackluster seasons surrounding it, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water did the same. The difference is that Spongebob Squarepants went on to see more movies and more in the years to come. The Simpsons finally, mercifully, the end may come.
It can be argued that Sponge Square pants has become too much of a children's show in the last, say, decade and has lost the satirical edge it had before the unfortunate departure of creator Steven Hillenburg, but there's no denying that it's Paramount's most successful franchise.
Star Trek fans know very well that it is one of the greatest franchises of all time, but it has always struggled to turn a profit, so it makes sense that the merchandising machine that is Sponge Square pants is one of the most valuable franchises in the world. Movie Sponge: Sponge Out of Water grossed over $325 million in theaters and, on a budget of just $72 million, was more profitable than Star Trek: Beyondfurther cementing its status as crown The crown jewel of the Paramount media empire. It's easy to overlook these days, but there's no denying that the wacky cartoon that turned Plankton into a recurring villain (sort of) is one of the world's most popular shows.
Although The Simpsons does it surpass longevity as the longest-running animated series, Sponge Square pants there are more spin-offs, more movies, more merchandise, more theme parks, more video games, and more memes. There are two generations right now that may recognize Squidward the Scout, but may not know who Hank the Scorpion is or why the Boo-urn is one of the biggest hits in comedy history. The golden age The Simpsons can't touch but it ended before Spongebob aired its first episode.
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water is by far the best of the show's feature films, though it was followed Sponge while running and this December the fourth film, Searching for square pants, it will be men theaters. 13 seasons of the year Sponge Square pants are available to stream on Paramount+ The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water there is also netflix.
