Hollywood has a mania for prequels and sequels, but this creates a vicious cycle where successful movies warrant another movie, but then there's often a lot worse than what came before (looking at you, Star Wars). And if the film is part of a broad franchise, the sequel may not be badbut it's different enough from what came before to turn audiences off. It happened with Furiosa: The Mad Max Saga. At first I was disappointed by how different this prequel was from that Fury Roadbut after rewatching it on netflix i decided furious is an imperfect masterpiece.
The plot of Furiosa
In case you've been living under a rock (or in an apocalyptic wasteland), here's a quick overview of furious which can help determine whether you'll stream it on Netflix. We follow the adventures of the titular Furiosa as she gets caught up in the violent power play between Dement and Immortan Joe, each of whom wants to be the supreme leader in a world powered by water and gasoline. Eventually, she grows stronger and more prominent as a member of Joe's army, and the film fully explains her character's unexpected heel turn. Mad Max: Fury Road.
If you are a Fury Road fan, watching furious Netflix might be confusing at first because of the streaming changes: Anya Taylor-Joy replaces Charlize Theron as Furiosa in this prequel, and Lachie Hulme replaces the late, great Hugh Keyes-Byrne as Immortan Joe. While he's barely in the film, Jacob Tomuri replaces Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky, and the cast is rounded out by other memorable newcomers including Chris Hemsworth in a wonderfully unusual performance as Dementus.
The reaction is apocalyptic
Creator of Mad Max George Miller returned to the helm of this prequel and after success Fury Road (which grossed $380.5 million against a budget of $154.6-185.2 million), expectations were high for another blockbuster. Unfortunately, furious crashed and burned well before it hit Netflix: This $168 million film barely made back its budget, earning a relatively paltry $173.8 million at the box office. The general consensus was that the film failed because it was too different from Fury Road (more on that soon), but it scored a minor theatrical victory: it won over the critics.
On Rotten tomatoes, furious With a critical score of 90 percent, critics generally praise the film's unexpectedly emotional core as well as how it delivers a juicy backstory. Fury Road. It also has an 89 percent Popcornmeter rating, and viewers generally find this prequel to be an exciting entry in Hollywood's weirdest franchise. It shows that those who watched furious enjoyed it for the most part…unfortunately, unless the movie gains a cult following on netflix, the sad thing is that too many people will skip this movie altogether.
It's a shame, although it took me a while to figure it out. Full confession: I was one of the many Mad Max fans who was disappointed in this prequel because it was so different from Fury Roadoffering a broad, character-driven origin story when I was expecting another non-stop, high-octane car chase. Once I watched furious Netflix, I got it me there was a problem. I give this film credit for not being a rehash of Fury Road, when director George Miller clearly wanted to return to the grand world-building he first kicked into high gear. Everyone remembers Thunder Dome for things like the titular Thunderdome showdown against Master Blaster and Tina Turner's brilliantly silly rematch. However, it's easy to forget how much this sequel was steeped in lore and world-building, showing us everything from how these post-apocalyptic cities generate energy to how cults of heroes form around the fragmented memories of the pre-apocalypse. It's uneven and certainly not as good as the previous film, The A road warriorbut it gives fans plenty to chew on.
Should you watch furious on Netflix (especially as part of a double feature that includes Fury Roadwhich is also located on streaming platform), you'll likely feel the same way: The prequel just isn't as great as the earlier Tom Hardy/Charlize Theron masterpiece, but it's still awesome. As long as you go in with an open mind (and ideally a healthy love of the Mad Max franchise), this movie will be full of hilarious performances and delightful surprises. However, if you wait for Fury Road: The Prequel, you will probably vote for Immortan Joe and rate this movie as mediocre!
So will you find furious flawed masterpiece like I did when you stream it on Netflix, or will you decide it's time for George Miller to hang this franchise up like one of Immortan Joe's blood bags? You won't know until you stream it for yourself. If nothing else, consider researching these movies… if our world ever descends into water wars like Max Rockatansky's, Anya Taylor-Joy's fighting moves could mean the difference between you becoming a warlord or just another carabao.
